    Hard starting Carbed 150V-Max

I have a new V150 carbed motor that seems to be harder to start than it should[15 to 20+secs.of turning the starter] when its not been in use for several days. The bulb is pumped tight before trying to start. It runs and starts fine after initial startup. Is this common? Also I'm still running double oil.

Normal. Keep choking till it runs on its own. Rest of the day it should fire right up.

I have the same motor it was brand new this January. It starts a little hard at first but once its warmed up it runs great and starts in a blink of an eye. Thats just a carb motor. When I start mine I hold in the choke for a couple of seconds, turn the key with the choke held in. When it fires let of the choke, if it seems like it is going to die press the key in for a sec (Choke untill it picks back up). Let it warm up a minute or two and its good to go.

Same thing here. I tried to adjust the auto choke but it still takes a few longer to crank. I find that the manual choke works better. Also, i know it i'm going fishing, i'll hook it up to the water hose and crank it up in the yard for a few minutes the day before, especially if it hasn't ran in a while. Always starts right up the next morning. Also another thing i do is remove the transom saver first, tilt motor level, pump bulb, let sit for a few while i get things unhooked. That also helps some.

Re: Hard starting Carbed 150V-Max (Rigs-a-Lot)

Like others said, you can do a search on here and find steps to adjust solenoid on your key choke to where it will do a little better, but it still doesnt work as good as the manual choke. This time of the year my boat starts fine with the adjusted key choke, but when it starts to cool a little I will always go ahead and pull out the manual choke just to save myself the frustration. Also, be sure and pump up your bulb good before you launch while the motor is tilted down and level. If you do this along with your manual choke it should fire right off every time. Now it may die a few seconds later if you cant jump up really fast and push the manual choke back in, but once you push it in it will fire right off and start easy the rest of the day.

mine usually starts after maybe 4 or 5 seconds all motors are different I'm still running double oil as well. I like the idea of starting it at home first that way I wont look stupid in front of the fourstroke and efi guys.

Had to do the same thing with my past 92 130. The solenoid choke did not work well on a cold motor. Pull the manual and it fired right up. Aside from this Yamaha carb engines IMO are the best outboards ever built. Truly bulletproof.

I had a 2003 150 carbed motor. Like others have said, may have to play with the choke when you first crank it but wont miss a beat the rest of the day.

Those motors hate the cold too. I made mine grumble on many a cold morning .

Re: Hard starting Carbed 150V-Max (Rigs-a-Lot)

I'll add my 2 cents and it will look very familiar with all other responses. I have the same motor (2005 model) and actually took it back to my dealer when I bought b/c it wouldn't start. Now I use this routine and it works everytime:

    1) Trim motor as vertical as possible
    2) Squeeze bulb till firm
    3) Pull manual choke lever
    4) Turn Key

Normally starts on 2nd or 3rd "key turn". I then let it run on the choke for maybe 5 sec. After that....she's good all day. But......i've tried to squeeze the bulb while in line at the ramp...with motor trimmed up. That does not work for me. Mine likes to be vertical when you squeeze the bulb.

Re: Hard starting Carbed 150V-Max (Jigdaddy)

I always squeeze the bulb while waiting in line, I'll try it your way see if it helps, mine always starts on the first try but after 4 or 5 seconds it sputters and dies, I figure I just need to hold the choke in longer. now its starting to get cool here in MN so well see how it starts now, almost time to (winterize) I'm jealous of you year round southern guys.

Re: Hard starting Carbed 150V-Max (08skeeternicc)

I never had a problem with my 90 and 97 model 150 Yamahas. Both carby. Trim as level as possible (that is important). Prime it until the bulb is hard and then maybe a couple more. Hold the choke on via the key and hold on a little throttle. Never took more than five seconds to start even after sitting for months. It does take a lot longer if it isn't primed properly or isn't level though. I only had to use my manual choke when the battery was too flat to hold it open. The battery was so bad it took two seconds from when I turned the key to when it first wound. But with the choke on, it kicked and went!

Re: Hard starting Carbed 150V-Max (ghind)

I'm finding on mine, the 4-5 times I've had it out since i bought it, that when I get to the ramp, I trim the motor down level, and pump the bulb till it's hard, with a couple extra pumps, and once in water I prime very little, and it turns over, but doesn't start easily. After several attempts trying to turn start, it finally tries, and after a couple times "trying" to start, it does. From there on, it starts quick the rest of the day. I'm thinking it's getting flooded, instead of not getting choked enough. Sounds like a few of you guys may be having the same issue. It my be getting too much fuel.???

Next time out, I'm going to lightly pump the bulb, and try starting it without giving it any choke.

You know what ? All these years I have been trying to figuer out how to start this **** motor, 1991 Pro V 150. I never thought about trimming the motor level and using the manual choke. Instead i just sat there and cussed for 5 years about how hard the first start of the day was. Now I need to ask the good lord above for forgivess.

Re: Hard starting Carbed 150V-Max (08skeeternicc)

yep, looked for it last night, and there it was!

I took my cowling off, in the garage, and notcied that when I use the manual choke, it moves parts very noticeably, but when I use the ignition key "push" choke, it does nothing to the those same parts which what the manual choke does???
Isn't it supposed to do the same as the manual?

Re: Hard starting Carbed 150V-Max (OhioChamp183)

It should act the same manual or key choke, I would try to adjust it. mine works the same manual or key.
