Who turns their key 1/2 way for 5 seconds or so before starting?

Someone mentioned on this or the Skeeter board to turn the key 1/2 way for 5 seconds or so to let the oil pump fill up before cranking it over. Does anyone else do this? My Oil light is lit as soon as I turn the key and goes out after about 4-5 seconds, I assume this is the oil pump filling?

I was never told this by my dealer so I wasn't sure if it's good practice or not??

I do the same thing. I turn the key half way and wait until the digital gauges update before cranking. I was never told to do this, or know if it makes a difference, just something I have gotten in the habit of doing.

I also wait until the oil light goes off before cranking. Don't know if I need to but I just assumed it as the oil pump.

Oil pump is driven off the motor and doesnt do anything when the key is on but motor not running. Never heard that one before I put the key in and fire it up.

Not the one in the boat....You ever turn on the key and push the switch on the passagers side of the motor and fill up the oil tank to the line.....

I think that you should trun the key half and wait for the light to go off, because that gives the Fuel pumps and oil pump time to feed the lines. If you take the cover off the motor to hear your fuel pump it takes just as long as it takes for that light to go off or just about the same time

I do it about 95% of the time unless I'm making a move within 5-10 mins form just stoping

I always turn my key and wait for the light to go off also. Don't know if it helps anything, but it's just a habit.

Re: Who turns their key 1/2 way for 5 seconds o ... (skeetersx200)

The high pressure fuel pump takes time to get the rail up to pressure, about 5 seconds. The oil pump has nothing to do with it, but any light that shows you how long 5 seconds is won't hurt to go by.

I've never noticed much difference, but in theory, the engine should start quicker if you turn it to the ON position for 5 seconds before cranking.

The oil is mixed into the VST tank which is where the high pressure fuel pump gets its feed. Waiting 5 seconds will do nothing to get more oil into the engine for starting.

As I posted earlier, I was just assuming it was oil. From everything being posted I guess is has to do with fuel.

It is not mandatory for there to be lights installed on the new models. I know of several (my '07 250 HPDI included) that did not have any warning lights.

Re: Who turns their key 1/2 way for 5 seconds o ... (marbledog)

I am a big fan of the "turn the key and wait a few seconds until cranking" group. My former tournament roomate Lawren Wetzel and I used to both fret about how strong our cranking batteries were (we have since both upgraded to big ones). We would get nervouse that after running livewells, graph and bilge pumps (us yankees are out in a lot of rough s*** when we need to pump water while just fishing), and we realized that it seemed easier to turn the motor over once all the pumps and sensors were up and running for a couple seconds with the key turned but not cranked. I say wait 2 or 3 seconds, then turn it over. Seems to help.

    Respectfully,
    Craig
