oil leaking from '87 ProV 150

Does anyone have an idea where and why I have oil leaking on the ground from my outboard? When I take it out and run it for a day of fishing I bring it home lower it all the way down then the next day theres a small puddle of oil on the ground. It doesn't leak at all after that just after I've used it. It would be nice to know. Any Ideas......Thank You.......

Check all the oil lines first. Then check the little transfer hoses, not sure what the right name is. They run from the intake to the block. That will cause some oil leakage. Mine always had oil residue in the cowl but never leaked to the ground.

Your oil pump seals are shot. You need to replace it. However, all replacements are using the new pumps so you will need to install an adaptor. Your Yamaha dealers will have the retrofit kit.

one other thing to check...turn your key on, you should hear a pump at your oil tank kick on momentarily as it fills the motor mounted tank. Sometime the float in the motor mounted tank gets stuck or sinks and tells the boat mounted tank to keep pumping oil....there's no where for the oil to go so it overflows the tank. I suspect you have an oil slick around the motor when you're on the water.

If that appears to be your problem, there is a test because it can either be the float switch or the control module that the wires run into. Find someone with a manual - there is a diagnostic test for the control module that you can do with a check light or voltmeter...

Good Luck,
Don<><

Thanks for all your responses. Here's a couple pics of what I believe is where it is coming from. There are a couple of holes under the flange that it looks like oil is coming out of. Does that support any of your responses?

looks like gear oil to me
might be coming out of shift shaft
if it was drive shaft seals it would come out of the water intake holes

well if it is tan color, it could be the 2 stroke oil
if it is it might be the rear powerhead seal

but look under the cowling and go from there

Looks like your drive shaft seals are shot. You might as well doo all of the lower unit seals whiles it's off. You need to take the water pump and the metal base off to get to those drive shaft seals. If those are originals, I'm really surprised they lasted this long.

Before you start, loosen up your bottom lower unit oil drain screw and check for water.

Good luck!

I just loosened the bottom screw and oil came out under some pressure and was real thin. It does have a oil consistancy but should it be thicker?

I think that if you had water intrusion that you would be able to tell. I did that on mine and you can tell there was water right away....... If you heard a release in pressure, then your seals are probably fine.

The previous poster mentioned lower crank seal. That is a possibility. You may want to drop the lower unit and look up the cavity where the drive shaft goes into and see if you have 2 stroke oil dripping from there.

BTW, since you broke the seal of your lower drain plug, use a new gasket. They are only good for a one time use and are cheap anyway. Make sure you have sufficient oil in the lower unit as well.

Good luck!
