    PROV 150 OIL PUMP

I HAVE A 91 PROV 150 IT HAS RUN FLAWLESS FOR 16 YRS UNTIL NOW, I WILL GET A LOW OIL ALARM,HAVE TO MANUALLY PUMP OIL INTO THE TANK ON THE ENGINE WITH THE TOGGLE SWITCH IT WILL RUN UNTIL THE OIL LEVEL GETS LOW AGAIN,REPEAT PROCESS.MY QUESTION IS HOW DOES THE OIL PUMP ON THE MAIN TANK KNOW WHEN TO PUMP OIL INTO THE TANK ON ENGINE,DOES THE SENSOR ON THE TANK DO MORE THAN ONE FUNCTION? IF I PULL THE SENSOR DROP THE FLOAT ALL THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM ALARM GOES OF LIKE IT IS SUPPOSED TO,IPULLED THE SENSOR IN THE MAIN TANK THER IS ONLY ABOUT A 1 INCH GAP ON THE BOTTOM WHERE THE FLOAT IS I CHECK THAT WITH AN OHM METER IT IS OPEN WHEN TO THE TOP IF THE SLIDE CLOSED TO THE BOTTOM OF SLIDE ANY INFO WOULD BE APPRECIATED

There is a sensor in the oil tank assembly (the one on the engine is the oil tank), you can see the wires leading into the top cap on that tank. When that oil tank gets low on oil, the sensor will give a signal to the sub tank (in your bilge) to turn on the pump.
I suspect that oil gauge is dirty, stuck, or bad. I've heard (somewhere) that it can possibly be cleaned. I don't know for sure because I've never done it.

Get the actual engine style from the side of your engine to transom bracket. Use the link pinned to the top of this board about Yamaha Parts to see a picture of what I'm talking about. It should be under a sub topic of oil tank.

THANK YOU I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT , THAT IS THE ONE THAT WILL SET OFF THE ALARM , IS THAT THE ONE THAT CALLS FOR OIL(SO IT DOES DO MORE THAN ONE FUNCTION?)

Yes, it's one or the other...the sensor in the oil tank, or the switch/control box that the wires from the oil tank run to. When I had a ProV (1985), I had to replace the switch/sensor at least twice in a 10 year period.

NOW TO ADD ANOTHER TWIST,THE SENSOR SEEMS TO BE OPERATIONAL IN THE SENSE IT WILL SHOW THE APPROPRIATE ARROWS ON THE DIGITAL GAUGE, SO DO YOU THINK SENSOR IS ALRIGHT THANKS

There are readings you can take to determine that, but I don't have a repair manual anymore. Try going to your local library and see if they have a repair manual for your engine, or buy one. Hamfisted can probably guide you to a manual...Mike, do you have a link?

Good! I hope it works for you. Now I wonder (in my mind) back to the days of my old ProV...I wonder if I could have saved $115 (twice) and just cleaned the sensor?
