    Slipping Lower Unit?

Here's the story... I was idling into a creek and eased over a shallow spot and hit bottom. I trimmed the motor up, and everything seemed ok afterwards. 3 trips later, I taking off and am really picking up speed when my RPM's jump and I loose bite. I thought I blew out or something, but I never could get a bite as I slowed to a stop. I could idle forward, but slipped above 1000 RPM's. I thought I had spun a hub, but examination out of the water revealed that I could turn the prop while in gear, and the prop didn't slip or have a damaged appearance -- something inside the lower unit was slipping and making a funny noise (not really grinding or anything). When out of gear, the prop spins smoothly, evenly, and with no unusual noises. The motor runs fine, and I'm certain its the lower unit. So... what could be broken, and is this something I can repair myself? Is this a tricky area to work on, and I be better off paying the money for a trained mechanic? [2003 Vmax HPDI 200]

Sounds like a spun your hub. Make a mark on the prop shaft and an adjacent mark on the prop then take it for a ride. If, when your done, the marks don't line up any more, that's what you did.

Yep, Spun hub in the prop I bet. Mark it and see if it moves.

I thought with a spun hub, the prop would turn but the shaft wouldn't when in gear (engine off and by hand)? In my case, both spin together. The slipping appears to be somewhere in the lower unit (shaft is turning too)... or is that how a spun hub works?

I tried to turn the prop again during the daylight, and think I might be turning the motor. Is that possible if I muscle it enough? I see signs of peeled and rolled up rubber, so it very possible I actually did spin the hub.

that motor has a lot more power than you do

the hub is spun, even though you can't turn it by hand
