Question for don. Fathhers at gville and was runing his boat about 500 yds on the water and all of a sudden motor jst shut down. Towed back to ramp and he said he found a fuse. On the motor looking at the motor and unpluging the power conection,its the yellow fuse and the back fuse on the right of the plug. He says evry time he puts in a new switch it just keeps blowing them. Thanks for any help.
Sounds like coils...
Do not replace any more fuses, make sure your kill switch is off and remove the terminal connections from your motor to the cranking battery.

DO NOT replace any more fuses.
DISCONNECT ENGINE CRANKING BATTERY.
Get the engine in to an authorized Mercury Dealer ASAP.
IF it's an Optimax... ask the dealer to reference the following service bulletins:
2007-025
2009-026 (if problems found in 2007-025)

Don can he just disconnet the batteery shut off switch instead of disconneting the battery cables ?

If indeed it's a 2005 year engine.... (SERIAL NUMBER IS HELPFUL) -those bulletins do NOT apply.
However... the CAUSE of the blown fuse would still need to be located, and POWER to the engine should still be interrupted via disconnecting the battery (as a precaution).
Common causes include:
-Ignition switch (or harness) malfunction
-Fuel pump malfunction (or short)
-Coil or coil driver malfunction (or short)
-** Reversed battery polarity
-Shorted Fuel Injector or Direct Injector (or a short in this portion of the harness)
I would strongly suggest that he enlist the "hands-on" expertise of a Certified or Master Technician for this particular problem.
