Questions about Canon rebel xTi

This is my first DSLR. I bought it used in great shape. kit with extras. (75-300,extra battery,CF reader for USB,512mb,2gb,430 speed lite flash,3 aftermarket filters,digital high def 0.5x wide angle lens with macro by digital concepts.) I don't know about the CF card. have always used sd cards. I didn't get a steal but I'm pleased I think. My wife has a Canon xSi so I have tinkered around with the settings. But is there a rule of thumb on setting Av and Tv, any pointers would be great. Any good ideas on cleaning spots off the end of the lens.. Some times when taking a picture the sun will leave what looks like water spots. Is that just part of it. I cant see where its spotted up.

First, congrats on the purchase

Second, Not really a rule of thumb for AV/TV settings. Just kinda what situation you are in, is what you use.

My best advice would be to just get out and just shoot. A very easy way to make the transition from auto to manual would be to shoot a pic in auto, then look at the exif data and see what settings the camera used. You can then put the camera in manual and use those settings to achieve the same shot. Then look at your surroundings and make a mental note of what you see (sunny, shady, overcast, what your subject is, is it moving, sitting still, etc. etc.)

Congrats on the purchase.

First question on the cards, Last knew the XTI also took SD cards, my sister owns one of those and her takes SD for sure.

As far as AV and TV goes i use them depending on the situation. For instance if i'm shooting in variable light and i want my f-stop to be a constant and don't mind in the shutter speed changes than AV is my choice. In the same instance i would use TV if i wanted a constant shutter speed and didn't mind if my F-stop and depth of field varied.


As far as those "spots" you are seeing i'm going to take a guess here(since i don't have a sample shot) and say what you are seeing is not a spot on the lens but what is called "lens flare". Sometimes lens flare is a desirable thing because it adds an effect to a photo and sometimes its not. There are a couple ways to combat it, one is don't shoot into direct sunlight, try to put the sin behind you. The other is a lens hood, a hood can really cut flare. I use the hood on my 70-200 a lot because in really bright sun at f2.8 flare can be a problem.

Thanx guys for all the help. I hope I can utilize it. I must have over looked the extra spot for sd card. I don't see a spot for one. I did notice the lenses i have do not have filters. is there a decent one out there to get. i do have 3 that came with it. but don't think there much

It looks like Canon made the XTI two ways, one with CF the other, newer model SD. If you need a card any best buy would have plenty of them that should work fine in your camera.

For reducing flare its not a filter you want, its a hood. Take a look at the link i put below on hoods. Its a good read.

Jim, I wonder if the "spots" he is seeing, is dust on the sensor? If it is an older camera it could be really dirty.

The way he describes it as a waterspot sounds a lot like lens flare. We really need to see a sample.

dust on the sensor would look very different and you would be shocked on how much dust gets on there before it becomes a problem.

Ok here are two pics. not very good so please be careful not to hurt my feelings i am sensitive. LOL really they are not good but show the spots. This camera is a Canon SX210 IS. I do think it is water spots. I have cleaned but not with and thing but a cloth that you clean your glasses with. I have not had any problems with the XTI yet. I have a very hard time holding still @ distances. The site you sent me to was great info. Messed around with auto to Manual. pretty nice. the time of day wash't the greatest. but got to do some playing with the settings. What do I need to clean the lenses with? And how do you identify the fungus on the XTI? I just got the XTI so not much shooting yet mostly with the SX 210. I know its a pocket style but has the settings just not SLR.

As far as cleaning a lens i have a kit that inclused a blower to remove big things and a spray w microfiber cloth to clean up spots. I dont find i need to use it very often.

Like Paul mentioned a dirty sensor can cause spots to show up too. I personally have never cleaned mine, i let a camera shop do it. Its too easy to damage the sensor.

I think I have it figured out. I took it to the photo shop and let him clean it. I needed to get a couple of filters anyways for the Xti. I went to the site you posted you know the dude with the FRO.lol Great stuff. Thank you all for all the help. and keep a open line cause I'm sure I'll have many more questions lol..... Hey by the way I have a old Ore that I got from my grandparents. I was my great grandpa's. Only it wasn't used to move a boat. Back in the day he used it to stir his Burgoo kettle. Which I think is way cool. I was wondering if you all might have any idea how old(guess) it is. He passed when I was a young Laid. I'm 40, so 40+ is all i have. It has some wrighting on it. O and I took them with the Xti. Was late this afternoon. Close to dark I suppose . Anyway I was playing around with camera so don't make to much fun of me lol. Thank you all again for the help.

He used a can of air. And a suede mirco cloth. Didn't look at camera just lens
