If you were new to photography

If you were new to photography and had less than $1000 to spend on a camera, accessories and software for editing, is it possible? And what equipment would you get?

    Thank you for any input

Definately possible. You can get a new Canon Rebel package for around $600 at Best Buy, use GIMP for editing (FREE!!), and have the $400 for whatever accessories you are wanting (possibly better glass ).

Also don't rule out used gear. Look on Fred Miranda, here and Craigslist and you can find some AWESOME deals on entire setups.

I would not worry about the software end. There is so much free stuff that is available. Gimp is very good and will do just about as much as Photoshop. Picnik is a free online editing software that works well for simple things like selective coloring, B/W etc.

For camera, I would look at the Cannon T2I or the T3I.

You could get you a starter DSLR like this http://www.adorama.com/ICAT3KR.html and have plenty of money for a longer lens and a fast prime.
Like others have said, software can be had for free or not too expensive.
Adobe Lightroom can be found on discount for $150 if you're willing to wait to find it on sale.
My suggestion is to go with a brand that has a lot of followers- Canon or Nikon.
Much more lens and accessories available, both new and used.
    Good luck!

+1 on the T1i.... I shoot with one, all except one photo you have ever seen me post here has been with my T1i. (exception photo of my ol dog Katie ) The T1i is a GREAT camera. I dont do any photo editing and dont know how. I just purchased a 7D and editing will be something I learn to do...I'll practice on my captures worry about editing later. If your looking to save some money a used T1i can be bought for $300-350 on ebay. A Canon 18-200 lens is all I shoot with, new they are $550-600. To many lenses and you'll confuse yourself. Practice with one and then upgrade later. Feel free to IM me if I can help.
