    Don Spark plug question

    Hey Don,
I was reading you post pinned on the top for what spark plugs to use in a 1999 225 EFI and I ordered the Champion QL77CC plugs. My question is when I got the boat the tech that rebuilt the engine put NGK spark plugs in it. Is it Ok to replace the NGK's with the champions that you suggested or will I have to do any kind of re sink and link or any thing like that since they are different brand of plug . In other words is there anything else I need to do besides just changing the plugs out? Thanks in advance

Re: Don Spark plug question (TritonCowboy)

Hi Keith. Not Don, but I have a Pro XB 250 EFI that uses the same plugs. Gap at .035 and according to the factory tech manual for your motor-
"Before reinstalling spark plugs, clean away dirt
on the spark plug seats. Install plugs finger tight,
and tighten 1/4 turn or torque to 20 lb. ft. (27N·m).
    Hope that this helps.

Re: Don Spark plug question (oldgeezer)

Thanks Bob, I am new to outboards and just didn't know. I was worried about the computer on the engine not liking a change in spark plug brands. Like I said I don't know squat about outboards except what I read on here. Once again THANKS a bunch for helping me out . I will do as you instructed me as soon as get them.

Re: Don Spark plug question (Largemouthlou)

You know I didn't look at the number I just saw the NGK on the side. The reason I went ahead and got the champions is because of the go by list that Don posted . I figured that he new alot more about what was good for my motor than I did. BUT! I will look at them this weekend and let you know

Re: Don Spark plug question (TritonCowboy)

Thanks... Don is correct by the book and some time using something other then what the manufacturer recomends will mess with the electronics in the motor, but if you were running good with the NGK,,,,,,,,,,,,,, well ya just may want to think about it after the Champs..

Appreciate the #er when ya get a chance,

You will DEFINITELY want to you use QL77CC plugs in your "Pre-2002 3L EFI engine".

Simply replace the current plugs with the appropriate QL77CC. No "adjustment" should be necessary simply from reinstalling the appropriate plug.

And Lou is definitely right.... running the incorrect spark plug can REALLY mess with the electronics on these engines.

Re: Don Spark plug question (Largemouthlou)

    Lou,

I finally got outside ( in the cold down here in texas) and look at the number on those NGK plugs in my motor. They are NGK R BR8HS. Also I would like to thank Bob, Lou,Don and Richard (Kllrbee) for educating me on my motor. I hate to say it but this outboard intimidates me because I know so little about it . So you all will more than likely see many more post from me asking sometimes silly questions. But like my dad said along time ago , the only silly question is the one never asked. My new champions will be here tuesday and I will put them in as instructed by everyone
once again THANKS for all of your support. Stay warm

    Keith
