    Hypothetical question

Let's say you're a "certified" outboard technician. You get an engine in your shop with a blown powerhead. Let's say a piston stuck in a cylinder, pulled the rod cap off the rod and bearings are everywhere. Somehow in the mix, the piston's skirt disintegrated and is now scattered from the throttle body to the mid section. There's also a hole in the said piston just for good measure.

My question is....would it cross your mind at some point to pull the prop off and at least look in the lower unit for any debris? How about pulling the lower unit OFF and make sure there isn't any debris in the mid while you have the powerhead off?

Experience there is the key! Certification can be done relatively easily but sometimes having repeat experience working on a particular product helps to automatically look there! Yes hypothetically, it should have been caught!

    Hypothetical Answer: Yes.

Of course, as Brian pointed out- EXPERIENCE is the key here (and perhaps a touch of "common sense").

That being said.... there are a few "nooks and crannys" in the mid that could easily "hide" a piece of debris from "plain view"....

    What makes you ask?

I don't have the pics on this computer, but they are on another forum (FB). They are of a piece of piston and the damage to the carrier lock nut that I found when I pulled the prop off.

If I'm going to spend a few bucks rebuilding a powerhead, why not spend an extra $50 or so for a new water pump/lower unit inspection so that when it's back together it's "good as new" from the prop to the top?</TD></TR></TABLE> Amen to that! Also Ive had Yamaha powerheads when they go down actually melt the tuner out! Youd have seen that prior to reinstalling that new powerhead that your going to now have to remove again!
