They are asking for any fish kills to be reported to
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries' (LDWF) Inland Fisheries Division wants the public to report fish kills where noted within the impact area of Hurricane Gustav.
The fish kills LDWF is currently experiencing are primarily the result of oxygen depletions. Organically rich bottom sediments were mixed with the water, resulting in fish kills right after the hurricane passed. Additional organic material, such as leaves and woody debris, were added to the water as the hurricane passed. The newly introduced materials took a few days to break down and add to the oxygen depletion. Additional fish kills occur as this material travels through the drainage system. Very few fish kills resulted from increases in salinity.
To report a fish kill, call 225-765-2343 or send emails to Inland Fisheries biologist Joey Shepard at jshepard@wlf.louisiana.gov.
