Cooling problem with 86 200hp Black Max, any help appreciated.

Water out of tell tale sputters at all speeds, water is also hot coming out of tell tale. PSI is about 15 at idle and 30 when on plane. Temp. guage goes to hot when running at speed for a couple of minutes. Water pump was just replaced last week but didnt help.

    Thanks for your help.

If you are seeing 15 lbs at idle and 30 at WOT there is nothing wrong with the water pump you have an obstruction of spent water leaving the block, look for and obstruction my bet its in the divider plate dumps ...The ONLY way you can "see" that kind of pressure is an obstruction, if the pump was bad you could NOT see that kind of pressure..

UPDATE... We took out the thermostats this afternoon and sure enough one was broken/stuck. We ran it temporarily without the thermostats and the pressure was much better. Approx. 8 at idle and about 18 at speed. The only problem is that it still ran hot on the guage and very warm out the tell tale. Do you think that I should still pull the poppet? I have not had an alarm go off but it could be disconnected as I have not checked yet.

I know these guages may not be accurate as well. Could the problem be the temp sensor? Where is it located?

I still would confirm gauge accuracy. The signal for your gauge could be taken in several places. The stuck thermostats confirm that the spent water leaving the block was obstructed...

Were they plugged with debree OR just scale ? If debree you may have only gotten some of the blockage and still have some left in the cooling path.

Also because the heat horn has not sounded I would also think that the heat gauge was a bit off...

The thermostat on the drivers side was actually broken. The metal bracket was out of the groves and would not let the t-stat open. Do you know the sender code for this motor so I can match a guage or is it more likely the sending unit (assuming the guage is not accurate).
