    Spun Hub

I spun the hub on my prop this weekend. not sure if I hit anything, just running in open/deep water. I stopped to check my maps and when I started up again the motor had a shudder to it and loud noise. I tried to continue and it got worse and then it started to vibrate badly. So I tried making it back to the ramp going under 10mph and eventually it stopped grabbing water all together. My question is, is my hub just spun or do I have a bent shaft also? New drive Plastic Hub Drive sleeves on order and will arrive today. The hub was spun, as I could turn it by hand with the motor in gear.

Shouldn't have hurt anything if you havent hit anything. I say replace it and roll on.

    Re: Spun Hub (jrokk27)

I spun a Fury hub this year on my 200HO, I lucked out and let it cool down and it would still grab enough to get on plane and go slow the 40 miles to the ramp. I carry a spare hub now, I'd been warned that the Etec exhaust was hot enough to cook the Merc hub, didn't believe it till it happened to me.

Hmm, exhaust cooking a hub...............Now theres a concept I never thought about. Wonder if it would be better for me to try and find a replacement prop that uses the metal style hub sleeve, as I am trying to gain more top end anyway.

Were you running close to WOT and then just shutdown quickly?

    worse than thought

Went to the lake today. I had to push my boat off the trailer an fish the marina because the prop is not pushing water. Looks like I have a gearcase issue because I can turn the prop by hand very easily with the motor in the engaged.

    Please help.

    Re: worse than thought (jrokk27)

Sorry to hear that. If it still pumps water while the motor is running, then it's likely a pinion gear split or the lower driveshaft snapped. Both issues are usually related to a previous hit on the gearcase, even months or seasons prior to this problem. Pull the drain and vent plugs and you may find chunks of metal on the magnets and if so, that means $$$

    Re: worse than thought (SEAHORSE)

It still pumps water. The prop spins in reverse and forward, it just will not propel the boat.
Is this a job I can do myself to try and save some $? I've changed the water pump before and had the shift rod out of the motor, not that this would be as easy as that. But the engineer in me is saying I can fix anything. Can I?

Water pump is still working but the propeller is not engaging at all anymore in reverse or forward gear. All input is appreciated.
    Here is the damage:

Looks like a project for gearcaseman. AKA Eddie Pope

From what I hear he is among the best at rebuilding gear cases. I bet he will fix you right up.

    Re: worse than thought (316jughead)

That is just a little more than a spun hub.

Without pulling the lower apart, it appears that Seahorse is right on again. The only way to be sure it to break it down and inspect.

I can vouch for gearcaseman - Eddie's work is top notch, and when I dropped off my l/u for reseal, he had the case broken down and inspected before I left. That is service!

I really wonder about impact damage, like SH said... you would be best served to have it inspected and pressure checked. Hopefully the case is still good, and that gearing is all that needs to be replaced.

Hate to say it but major chunks of metal even sheared off the plug magnet - or it came off and started the problem possibly. That amount of damage usually means that each bearing surface of each shaft is damaged along with every bearing, thrust washer, and gear. It's a total unfortunately. Talk to gearcaseman or look for one of the $795 Chinese versions.

    Re: (SEAHORSE)

About the SEI gear case; as I understand it they don't have low water pickups. Would this cause issues on my boat? 69-73mph

    Re: (jrokk27)

The SEI gearcases are not built on the Ligthtning case like you have. They are built on the stock case or off shore case. It isn't a perfromance case. If you want a performance case then contact Riverside Marine in Arkansas and get you a reman Lightning case. Or look in the motor parts for sale pages for a used Lightning case. Disconnect the shift cable at the motor. Spin the prop with your foot while moving the shift linkage between forward and reverse. If I locks in gear in both directions you could have had a bad cable but by the looks of the chunks it looks like the pinion gear may have decided to leave this world.

    Re: (ChampioNman)

I understand what your saying about the SEI cases not being built for performance. but can I still drive 68-73mph or do I need to keep it much lower? I spoke with gearcaseman today. We talked about the SEI and other options. Should I go with gearcaseman or Riverside in Arkansas. If I cant drive as fast as I do now, I want to rebuild my lightning case

    Re: (jrokk27)

The SEI is a good case but if you are surfacing a prop then that is not the case for you. You would be better suited with a Reman case from either Eddie or Riverside.
