    Starter problem ?

I have developed a starting issue. About 1 out of 10 times the big motor will not turn over but I can hear something under the cowl making a spinning noise (starter I assume) but the bendix is not kicking in to turn the big motor. I had about 10 successful starts at home with the cowl off and water hose hooked to motor. When on the lake it may happen 1-2 a day and sometimes no trouble at all.

My battery was 4 years old so I bought a new one...group 24 Heavy Duty 1000 cca. I cleaned all connections at the battery side. They had very little corrosion because I always use dialect grease when installing anything electrical. When starting boat my depth finder reads battery at 12.4V and falls to 11.3V when under a load.

Any suggestion as to what my problem is and what I can do?

Clean the bendix shaft and add a light lubricant, that should take care of the problem.

    Re: Starter problem ? (Danrude)

I removed the starter and there was a small amount of grease around the shaft. There was only about 1" of the shaft on the out side of the housing. I cleaned the area and sprayed some wd40 on the shaft. I let it soak for a few minutes then I cleaned it again. Then I put a light coat of 90W oil on the 1" piece of shaft...should I take the housing off and clean and grease more of the shaft...if yes anything I need to know about before I remove the housing?

Clean the entire shaft and use a light oil like reel oil that 90W will cause a problem.

    Re: Starter problem ? (Danrude)

Ok thanks...It will be a few days before I can work on it again. After I get it cleaned and lubed with a light oil I will take it out on the water a couple of times. It may be a couple of weeks before I know any results due to time issues.
