    '05 ETEC 200 HO - Sputter/bogging is Back

    Model E200DHLSDF
    SN - 05131325

I posted a while back about my ETEC sputtering while cruising along. Loses about 100-200 RPM then back. Kinda intermittent. Feels like when a motor starts running out of gas then catches. It might do it a few times then runs fine. I notice it most around 4k rpm. I either can't feel it or it's not happening at WOT. I can take it up to about 5600 and it seems to stay right there.

I had another weird thing happen today after a short run. When I stopped and took it out of gear, it went into a fast idle. About 1200 RPM and nothing I did seemed to do anything. I shut it off and restarted and it was fine after that.

I thought it had quit doing it but it seems to have come back. Didn't really do anything to fix it before. It just kind of stopped sputtering for a while..

I did purchase a diag cable and downloaded the s/w. I don't see much but the following:

    Persistent Faults:
    Code Times Last
    97 23 17
    38 14 3
    43 19 273
    79 1 39
    1 1 56

    No other faults listed.

I've also noticed that my voltmeter stays pegged on 14 volts when I give it any throttle at all. Idles at about 12.5. I've been charging my cranking battery after every trip here lately. Not much, just a top off more than anything.

Any suggestions? Could it be electrical? Mechanical (throttle cable, some position sensor, etc.)

    Thanks!

    Greg

Mine runs 14.1 14.2 when running just depends what all I turn on or off electrical.
Don't know your motor but my sputtered and missed at higher rpms took a new powwer pack and some adjustments runs great after I did all that, not saying that will fix it,next time it does it hit your choke if it bogs down it's prop electrical, if it picks up it's prop fuel delivery

The etec dosen't have any power packs, or choke. It's the holidays, so response may be slow, but the gurus will be around.....

This linkage seems a little loose to me. It appears to be fine, front to back, but side to side it seems to have a fair amount of play in it. It's like it's worn on the bolt/shaft or there is a bushing worn out or something.

With the throttle about halfway, I can still move this thing side to side. At WOT I can't move it as much. Is that normal?

    Thanks for the help!!

First let me say I am not a boat mechanic but I do want to share some information with you. I had a problem very similiar to yours a couple of years ago. Motor would drop a couple of hunders rpms in the mid range area. Most of the time around 3800-4200 is when it would miss the then go back instantly to running smooth. The voltmeter would bounce up and down as motor missed. At times it would throw alarms for TPS sensor and water in fuel. There was even a couple of times when it would be hard to start but when it fired it would idle crazy up and down 800-1500.

When having the codes checked they could not find anything wrong. Even a test drive to the lake would not duplicted the problem because it was a here one day gone the next. I just drove my boat like normal until one day it finally went haywire. Hard to start, surging idle rpms, miss like crazy...took it back to a different dearler that had a certified Evinrude tech and with in a few minutes he narrowed the problem down to my computer.

If my memory is correct a new couputer for my boat from Evinrude was $1700. I could have sent it off to DFI Technologies and had it refurbuished for a fraction of that cost but the ceritfied dealer would not use an outside source to refurbiush a part. I swallowed the bullet and shelled out the $ and boat has ran like a fine tuned sewing machince since I replaced my computer. I hope you are not looking at a 2K fix but you problem does sound very familiar.
