Hey guys I'm entertaining the Idea of buying a boat with the above motor. I have heard the stigma with these motors and was wondering if there is a way to tell if one is safe or if all should be avoided

my way thinking would be if it has run this long it should be as reliable as any 98 model used motor you would buy.if it's cheap enough and you like the hull enough to repower if blows.
Price the hull without the motor and if it comes within that price, buy it, if they want more...RUN!!!
Wasn't there something to do with an update? Did this fix the problem or no?
Updated or not, you can't get any $$ for 'em, why pay for 'em.... JMHO

i always hear this on here, you can't get any money for them, but if there is a boat at a dealer for sale with these motors and you say don't count the motor in the price since they are no good, they price you a hull with no motor, they don't leave it on there for you to haul off for them.most i see around here, not many though, are priced right in line with the carbed intruders etc of the same year.hell i can never sell anything close to what i paid for it anyway.![]()
I would take a carbed intruder anyday over a ficht, The 200 and 225 ficht were fine, and if you could find a 150-175 ficht BEFORE ANY UPDATES, some of them were ok.
my 99' 175 ficht(updates) purrs like a kitten, for now anyways![]()

Is there a way to know by looking at the motor if it has had any updates done. I have heard about the pinned heads and is there a way to tell if they have had this done?
I'll be interested in this answer also. I have a line on a 2000 Javelin 19' Renegrade with a 175 Ficht.

I don't have any experience with those motors but regardless, it's 13 yrs old and unless I missed it in the post has not had a history of blowing in those 13 yrs - seems a little unreasonable to raise the "unreliable" spectre for something that age.
All you got to do is search.... You will see THOUSANDS of post stating what we are telling you.....![]()
There's no doubt many of those did go bad in the first few years, but this is 13 yrs old and apparently still going strong. You'd be hard pushed to objectively blame a future problem on the manufacture, IMO more likely to just be regular wear and tear at that age.
For comparison I have a "reliable" (according to general consensus) 04 Bomb 225 HO DFI that has blown twice and had the gearcase replaced under warranty. Meticulously maintained too.

Most of 'em that old has redicously low hours also....... with out the 'puter print out of the engine, we have so little to go on,, but at the same time, if you want to trade a rig in with that engine, the dealer will give you nothing for that engine.....again....why pay for it....JMHO
Ok I understand they have been trouble and don't hold much value. I think if I can get the boat for what I think I can I will still be able to justify having to repower down the road. Still curious though if there is a way to tell if there has been uPdates and if the updates fixed anything.
Sounds like a smart plan - any 13 yr old motor could blow, so if you can get it for essentially nothing based on the unreliability issue then you are ahead of the game if it does take a dive.
