He looks like a copperhead but it could be a corn snake or any number of poisonous bastards. Did ya kill it?

    Re: Snake (mikedaleo)

Nope, it is in a bucket with a top on it. KDFW is coming out in the morning to check it out. If it is a poisnous snake, there could be more and a mother. I don't need one of my grandkids getting a snake bite, and I want to be sure what it is.

It's markings look like a copperhead. Their coloration is really varied from one snake to the next. Hopefully you killed the bastage.

A little late in the year to find one with a mother close by, but I wouldn't take chances with my kids either.

    Re: Snake (Slow Rollin)

That tighteye looks like a small cowsucker (milksnake) to me. The copperheads I have seen close up had bands of color instead of blotches with a very coppery color. If my Jack Russell was near, it'd be a dead snake fer sure

    Re: Snake (KyLegndHamr)

Don't go by the color only all north american poisons snakes have a diamond shaped head,(except coral snake) where as non poisons snakes the head is more in line with the body as far as width goes. My first guess would be a rat snake.
It is not a water moccasin, coral, or rattle snake.
The chances of you finding the mother around this late in the year is slim to knell in my book. Babies are usually born/hatched ( depends on the species of snake, some do have live births) in Late spring/ early summer.
Besides scaring the shit out of people they (snakes) have there purpose, and do not need to be randomly killed.
My experience with snakes is from when I lived in S. Calif. and used to catch Rattlers for the San Diego zoo for venom, used for anti toxin and medical studies.Only 4 poisonous snakes in the United States...Water Moccasin, Copper Head, Rattle Snake witch the poison attacks the muscles. The Coral Snake is a neurotoxin. Only poisonous lizard is the gila monster.

Colors look like a corn snake, but that sure looks like the head of a pit viper. I wouldn't put my hand in the bucket with it.
