2003 - 225 ho - lost reverse

I am looking for a source to buy the parts to rebuild my 225 ho lower unit, I believe I lost reverse or the clutch dog is worn. Forward gear is perfect and i was able to get it into reverse for the last few weeks by easing into it but now she just slips. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. I would have someone fix it for me but right now everyone seems way to busy and I have about a week to rectify the problem!

The fastest turnaround would be Eddie Pope AKA Gearcaseman. His number is in the one stop shopping link.

Have you tried to adjust your cable for more positive reverse engagement? After doing so, if you still have no reverse, then it might be the parts being worn as you mentioned. You can replace these pieces or have a machine shop recut them.

No I haven't tried adjusting the cable but I have a sneaky suspicion that might be the culprit because when it did lock in there was zero slipping the problem was just getting it into gear. Now I need to find out where the cable is so I can adjust, any suggestions Eddie?

You hit the nail on the head, had it readjusted, and works like a champ again
!!!!! while I was there had forward adjusted too cause it was a little off as well.

I spoke too soon, the shift rod was 1/4" out of adjustment from when I had the new LU put on 1-1/2 yrs ago and the clutch and reverse gear were worn. we thought it was fixed but when you gave it some RPM's it jumped out of gear. Sooooooo a new clutch and reverse gear and new seals later and she should be back better than before especially now that the linkage is set correctly.

I was having a similar problem with a 96 Johnson 200 that I recently purchased. It was grinding when shifting to reverse. I had water in the lower unit gear oil, so I tore it down far enough to replace the seals without removing the driveshaft or clutch dog. Since I had the reverse gear out I took some pictures, but it doesn't look too bad. GEARCASEMAN can you tell me what you think? I'm thinking a cable adjustment may help as it is better after put it back to gather and doing some minor adjustment to the shift cable, but it still grinds a little.

Johnny,

Please resize your gear picture image to a more manageable 800 by 600 pixels. Your oversize image distrupts the page formatting.

    Thank you

It appears to me that you have some positive angle on the engagement dogs. This is probably due to being a little out of adjustment in the past. When you couple this with a clutch dog that is in the same shape, you have a slipping situation. I would think about remachining these pieces or replacing them with new if you can't adjust satisfactorily.
