Sounds like your master cylinder is dry and your brakes are not working. Any time the trailer slams into the ball, it normally means the brakes are not working. A new shock won't help you. Check your brakes out.

my trailer had the same problem, since mine was a '97 model,i figured it was time to replace all the components since my brakes wasn't working.put in the complete actuator and everything works great!

Before you tear into your actuator. Make sure your hitch, reciever, and ball are not worn, loose or broken.

Can you push the actuator by hand without tension?

There is a shock, but that's for the release, or when accelerating.

    Spa City Jason,

What did the new set up cost you? I'm having the same issue, slamming when I stop. I'm thinking (by reading though all this) I will need to replace some parts to get them working...

    Thanks,
