Wiring a 5 Flat Plug for Trailer Brakes

I just bought a new boat that has the surge brakes on it. You need a 5 flat plug which is the normal 4 flat with the addition of the reverse light which disengages the brakes when you are backing up. I have a Chevy Uplander Van that I tow with and the wiring harnes that you can buy from Chevy only accomodates a 4 flat. Where and how do most people splice into the reverse light? Does anyone know what color the reverse light wire is?

Goto Pepboys, they have an adapter for the reverse, it works really well, and has instructions on what wire to tap .....

I have found an adaptor but I need to tie it into the reverse light. In looking at the harness runing back through the vehicle I was wondering if anyone knows what color the reverse line should be so I don't have to probe each wire while the van is running and it in reverse while I am laying in under it.

Most newer vehicle you can get the correct plug and harness that will just plug into the existing wiring. You do not have to slice when you use the kit.

I checked with Chevy and they don't have one. I think because the uplander is not meant for towing much. I went ahead and pulled the tail light and spliced into the reverse light.

Re: Wiring a 5 Flat Plug for Trailer Brakes (SSykes)

Hey, I just bought a new ProCraft with the 5 wire plug. I had to change over my 99 Suburban. I bought the 5 wire plug and plugged in as usual (4wires) and then had to tap into my reverse light. To find the reverse wire I pulled the light like I was going to change a bulb and then just traced the wire. I then used one of those wire taps that the original runs through and you add a wire next to it and close and lock it.....auto zone....I was a little worried about doing it, but it turned out to be really easy!!!!
