Re: cheaper nice rifle question (JustinTH)

unfortunately, most rifles today are very expensive. even the cheap ones are. My recommendations are to go to a pawn shop or gun store and find a very nice used rifle for sale, scope with or without. I think you can find a nice cheap rifle for a good price. We bought my step son a nice remmington 700 for around $300.00 brand new, the customer brought it back because he didnt like it. We love it, its a 30-06. keep your eyes open. Also, Tikka is a great inexpensive brand as well.

    Justin's wife here......

What kind of sissy do you think I am - only suggesting a .243?

    I'm wanting a 7mm, 30-06, or .270. I have been shooting rifles & shotguns since I was around 9 years old.

    Thanks for the advice everyone!

Nothing wrong with the .243 nothing sissy about it, folks were just giving you credit for excellent shot placement and pointing out that you didn't need to make up for poor shot placement by using a larger caliber.

For an inexpensive rifle the Savage 110 is dang hard to beat, they are shooters too.

Re: cheaper nice rifle question (JustinTH)

I have used the savage model 110 with an accutrigger and it was a very accurate rifle. I also have a model 700 sps in a 270. Been an excellent rifle as well and nice thing is they did not hurt the pocket too bad. On calibre I would think 270 or a 7mm/08 would be a great choice for your wife. Just remember to shoulder the guns you do look at and make sure the stock fits her. that is most important thing. I light calibre with an improper fitting stock will buck hard and like wise a bigger calibre with a properly fitted stock for her can be very tame. Good luck. Wish my wife would hunt and shoot. You are lucky.

I think we might end up going with a savage for the time being ...we gotta get back out to some gun shops and see what they are like for her to shoulder like you said ...we are just gonna not rush and buy one but see if we find a good deal on a nice deer rifle for her

If you find the length of pull long they do make a youth version with a slightly shorter length of pull that might fit her better.

You might want to check out the Marlin XL/XS-7's. These are getting rave reviews on many different forums for accuracy, fit and finish, and you can find them in the $300.00-$400.00 range.

I finally got the chance to handle one last week, and I was impressed with the way it felt, smoothness of the action, and the trigger wasn't that bad.

I'd certainly give it a look.

Match the cal. to the game that you will be hunting. Don't go to small of cal. I would say in Canada you would need something for the larger game. A 338-06 A square or a 35 Whelen is a good round both are base on a 30-06. Both are factor ammo also now. Just a push not a quick kick like the 30-06 or 7 mm mag. Took a nice white tail with a 338-06 last season. Try to get someone to let you shoot the cal in what every you get.

    Good Luck

All the calibers you mentioned from a 270 to a 30-06 is all you need up here. I would not hesitate to take my 270 for moose. All the ones we have shot have not jumped back up and came back to life and never lost one either.Never felt under gunned .Only time I would want tocarry a 338 win mag or similiar for moose is if you are in a place where a big brown furry critter wants to chew on your behind. In Nova Scotia that doesn't apply.

I agree with ya on that...all we have is black bear and yotes to worry about and I have yet to see either while hunting
