    Fixed blades or mechanical?

What do you shoot and why?

I shot fixed (Muzzy) forever and aluminum XX75 2315. However when I switched to carbon a few years back just was not happy with the fixed blade flight. It was then I switched to mechanical. I like mechanical flight alot better but still not convinced they kill any better than a fixed. I killed a couple with the Rage 3-blade but this year I will shoot the Rage 2-blade because of the extra cutting diameter.

Re: Fixed blades or mechanical? (SkeeterBill1)

my personal opinion: i just can't rely on something to open, i hunt hard when i do, usually after one deer that i have in mind. i dont want to take the chance on that thing opening in time and let it depend whether i back that deer or not. you made a good point with the carbon arrows and fixed blades, however there are a few that shoot great in carbon. my favorite being the Steelforce, sheratted (sp?) edge. yes it is a big blade, but it flys very nice, another is the magnus stinger, lifetime warranty and will fly as good as a field tip, last is a broad head made by DeadHead, they shoot great too. This year i am shooting a muzzy fixed...just wanted to try it, i'll post my results. as far as the Rage goes, it's the new thing, open before it hits, a lot of companies sell them, i may oneday, but right now i just don't have the desire.

Re: Fixed blades or mechanical? (jseasor)

In the past i have shot a lot of diffrent ones.....but i always like a fixed blade of some type.....i used to shoot only Muzzys but their quality control got a bit out for me...last batch i bought out of a 6 pack i had 3 that were right...so i went to Slick Tricks......they have the same cutting dia as a Muzzy if you buy the Magnums at 1-1/16 (i think) but have a smaller profile.....flew great on the last bow (not the one i jsut got rid of).....im like Seasor i jsut cant rely on something that i hope opens up to make a good quick clean kill......i hear a lot of talk about the Rage and a lot of people love them and some dont......i might throw a bow together this year and hunt some jsut for some meat for the freezer if i cant get a good tune on the bow i have at the house i might go with the Mechanicles if i have to but that will be a last resort if it comes to that .....but my #1 choice is always a good fixed blade

I got burnt by a mechanical once. I used to swear by them. Arrow penetrated 1", began to open as it hit a rib, and pivoted right out. Crazy to see an arrow covered in blood for 3/4". Never found that deer, as vitals went untouched. Try to Magnus Stinger and see how that fixed blade flies for you

    Re: (vatreefarmer)

I tried some Rocket mechanical heads a few years ago because they flew just like my field tips. I killed quite a few deer with them, but the penetration was terrible. I shot deer as close as 10 yards with them, pulling about 65 lbs. and I never was able to completely pass through. I also had a few that didn't seem to penetrate the deer at the same angle as the shot.

I have since switched back to fixed, this time Muzzy's and I have been very happy with them. The are built to take some abuse.

Re: Fixed blades or mechanical? (SkeeterBill1)

I've shot both but when I go after elk, moose or bear I use a fixed blade. I shot in one side of a moose and found my arrow stuck in a tree on the other side. You can't do any better then that. I like g5 for fixed blades. I once shot a whitetail from a high stand almost straight down and the spitfire didn't open it just went down the side of the deer and put a nasty cut on it.

yep, by far the deadliest broadhead I have ever shot was a Muzzy PHANTHOM but I just could not get confident with their flight matched with the lighter carbon shaft. I felt like I was trying to tune arrows more than practice.

Tightest groupings I ever got from a fixed blade. Terminal performance is excellant as well

I switched from mechanical to G5 couple of seasons ago and i love them. They shoot tight groups and are tough as nails also.

Re: Fixed blades or mechanical? (SkeeterBill1)

just my experience: I shot the Muzzy 3 blade 100 gr for a long time and once I got the arrow and broad head tuned they were great. Got tired of always having to try and tune heads to arrows so I went to mechanicals 4 years ago.

I shoot the Scorpion XP 100. I have taken 8 deer with these and have yet to lose one OR have one run past 40 yards. My hunting partner started giving me hell about them because he couldn't find any field test data etc. etc. Well, I told him my field test were deadly. So, now I only shoot mechanical.

I used to be a die hard fixed guy - thunderhead 100's or nothing..........

Then my buddy got a nice buck with mechanical and when I saw what kind of hole they made in that buck - I switched too and never looked back.....

Re: Fixed blades or mechanical? (MasterCASTER!)

mechanical v. fixed the difference equals a tuned bow. Archers that switch to mechanicals, for the most part due it's because the bow they are shooting will not tune for them shooting fixed blade heads. Spend the extra time in tuning or find a good bow tech that knows how to tune one.

where did you get that info?

archers who use mechanical like the fact that they fly truer to a field point than fixed blades do............

Absolutely agree 100%. My local proshop tech shoots mechanicals out of his Bowtech and he is the best tech I have worked with.

that used to be the case but anymore with the technolegy out there the mechanicles are pretty good now....and a untuned bow wont throw a good mechanicle either ....been there done that

Re: Fixed blades or mechanical? (SkeeterBill1)

I've harvested 7 species with fixed blades (100 grain thunderheads and 135 grain muzzy's). All but 4 or 5 of those 40+ kills resulted in pass throughs. I'm personally aware of 5 unrecovered animals (2 pigs, 2 mulies, and 1 elk) that the hunters swore were due to mechanical failures on good shots.
