1986 200 hp Johnson idleing porblem

Finally had someone tell me to put the red lever on the primer solenoid in the up position instead of the down position. She gets on plane everytime now, but dies at idle if I take my foot off the hotfoot pedal. I have NO clue whats goin on. With the primer valve in the down position she idles, but doesn't get on plane until you drive around for a few mins. With it in the up position she gets on plane EVERY time, but dies at idle. I'm not a boat mechanic by any means. I'm a lil lost right now.

Then it may be time to take your motor to a mechanic that is familiar with your motor.

I'm thinking you're right. I read in my manual that the valve should be down instead of up. With it down, it won't get on plane unless you idle around for a few mins, but with it up, it gets on plane right away every time, but will die at idle when I let off the hotfoot. Changed the carb gaskets(they were old and done for) and she started and idled fine with the valve in the run position(down position) but would not get on plane until after a few mins of idleing around.

A sync n link would be in order as would an inspection of the recirc valves on the intake manifold.

Are the recirc valves the lines that run from the carbs back into the manifold? Haven't checked those. Probably shoulda checked those when I had the carbs off and changing the gaskets.

They run back to the cylinders. small hoses that go up to the intakes.

Ok. Other people tell me NOT to run it with the primer valve in the up position or I could ruin the pistons. They tell me I have a carb problem or fuel supply problem. Back to square one.

Seems like the leak is coming from where the top of the carbs meet the bowls. I was told I could sand them down with 320 grit sandpaper on a glass to make them level again. They seem warped and that's where I'm sucking air in so it won't let it get on plane until it builds enough pressure in the carbs.

Sometimes you can lap the bowls on an even surface with sandpaper. The important thing is NOT to overtorque the screws when putting 'em back on.

What do you mean by "lap the bowls"?

He means do what you were talking about with the 320 grit sand paper, by doing it in a figure 8 fashion the process is called lapping.

Still having issues with this thing. ONLY way I can get on plane is by pushing the choke in and holding it in to run. Ran her on the muffs yesterday and she's idling REALLY rough. After lowering her for storage in the garage overnight, she has what seems to be a mixture of oil and gas leaking down the shaft of the motor. Very small leak, but a leak nonetheless.

If you're having to push the choke in to get her to take off, you have a fuel delivery problem. Check every thing all the way back to the tank. Also did you do the sync and link??

    Re: (Bassmeister)

Took her in to the shop and compression came back LOW on one of the cylinders. He said there was VERY minimal scorching on it, but not enough to cause the piston to stick. He said it more than likely is a ring is sticking, but they need to crack her open to find out for sure and make sure it's not wore out to need to be bore out.

Ever done a decarb on it??? I would try that and see if it frees up the stuck ring(s) JMHO

The shop said they did a decarbon but it still showed low compression. They let it sit overnight to work and still no go.

so what do you suggest I do when I pick her up from the shop to free up the ring?
