    Need a clever fix!

Have 3 rods which the reel explodes out of the seat when i set the hook. The threaded parts of the rod no longer tightens down all the way, it will get snug then if i turn it more it breaks loose again. Any ideas on a quick easy fix?

You might try some electrical tape around the threads. Maybe that will let them grip enough to hold it.

small hose clamp, them wrap with electrical tape for covering any sharps. have an Allstar in that condition, works like new.

Heavy duty nylon zip ties work good and you can trim away sharp edges.

Electrial tape works great, put it on all my reel seats, never had any trouble.

Re: Need a clever fix! (Hardhead1)

I actually replaced the reel seats...All Star IM10X rods. Took some courage to mess with them but once I started there was no turning back. I just love the IM10X blanks. I got the cork and reel seat from Mudhole. I removed the fore grip and moved the reel seat forward which really improved the "feel" of the rod. I trimmed excess threads from the reel seat too. I also did a split grip on the rear. It came out well for an amateur and I use these more than my many other rods. I saw the suggestions on how to do it on another site...

You would be suprised how easy it is...hardest part is first grabbing the cork with the pliers and tearing off chunks!

Here is a little write-up I did on it...down below the crankbaits.

I've heard that you can firm up a reel by taking a credit card (like the ones that you get in the mail that aren't really activated) and cut them into strips and put them under the reel in the reel seat.

It isnt the reel seat it is the threaded locking part of the reel.

Mike not pushing a sponsor here, but if you don't plan on taking the reel off for awhile, add a drop or 2 of PRO's Soft Bait glue, that reel seat won't move then, thread it down add 2 drops, it will be locked!! But then again you won't be able to change reels either! Just a thought!

And a fine job you did, took some guts to whack on that rod. Question: was the rear reel "foot" the one that was popping out , if so, would deepening the reel seat pocket with a dremmel tool provide more of a pocket for it to seat into. Or, are you running out of threads on your thrust or jamb nut, if this is the case you could try to make you some more threads with JB Weld and use some release agent on the nut so it wouldn't permanently bond it. Devcon also makes some super metallic epoxies in alum, ss,brass etc. usually find at an industrrial supply house.

    Instead of Electrical Tape

Instead of electrical tape I would use gas or plumbers tape it is very thin and will not bunch up on you. Thread tape is designed to be threaded over and costs about 1.50

Re: Instead of Electrical Tape (zippers)

May have to look into that, when you tighten down the threads on it they release before they get completely tight, then when it is tightened to the point where it doesnt release that sint tight enough to apply a good hookset with a jig, worm, etc.

Re: Instead of Electrical Tape (Original TrickWorm)

Original TrickWorm the thread issue was what was wrong with mine. I tried about everything before swapping the reelseats. The straw that broke the camels back was setting the hook on a nice bass in a T and the reel popped out...I had the electrical tape trick on it. Lost that fish.

Re: Instead of Electrical Tape (Original TrickWorm)

When you are using the elec tape around the threads, if you put it on in the same directionof the threads, it should not bunch up...If it does, use thread seal tape like said above... Then wrap elec tape on the outside of the locking collar after you have it tightened down...Use a drop of super glue under the last edge of the tape and the tape will nottry to come loose.... I have 3 rods that have this issue and once I put the tape on them, they have never come loose..It is even hard to change out the reals, because they are so tight..
