    Possible Ranger Restoration?

I have my eye on this Ranger 451v as a resto. If I remember right they started making the 451v in 1992 so my hope would be the transom would be ok in it? The rest of the boat by looking at the pictures is rough. No motor, boat and trailer only. Since this would be my first restore does it look worth while and what is a good price to try and get it for so a guy wouldn't go broke fixing it up?

What is the condition of the door? What materials do you have on hand at this present time? Do you have a motor to fit it?

I haven't looked at it in person yet. I wanted to get some ideas on what to look for, problem areas, etc from here before I went to look at it. Its not exactly local so I would like to make only one trip if I do go look at it. As far as tools, etc between myself, family and friends I should have access to pretty much anything I would need for a restore. As for carpet, etc for the boat I don't have none of that. I don't have a motor to go on it at this moment in time.

Big thing is the transom and floor . If transom is rotted then most likley it will need stringer work also. In my thinking an older boat and trailer is not worth much do to the fact of the unknown. . Now if this happens to be tha boat of your dreams .and you can do the work and going to keep the boat for a leanth of time . You will know what you got. You could have more in to the boat then it is worth . but it is still cheeper then a new boat. and you could get many more years of use out of it . I have done 3 boats and have been lucky with them I have an old Basscat that I got and missed a coulpe of areas on it when I looked at it I t ended up as a doner boat. Can't win them all

The good thing is that boat would be all fiberglass transom. I believe they made that switch in 1989.

That was my original thought on the transom. I have always wanted a Ranger but even the old 1980's around here people want an arm and leg. But since I have never done this before didn't know how much would be into it for the restore. The big cost would be I would have to find a motor for the back.

I like it, if you are not pushed for time or in a hurry to get it in the water then I sat get it! You can pick up a used or even a new motor for a lot less than you can get a new boat for.

Not pushed for time. My original plan was to buy a project and have it ready for when the lake near me opens up to public use. Since that is sometime spring 2012 as of now I would have plenty of afternoons and weekends to work on it. Its painful seeing someone let a good boat get that way.

The transom is definitely the newer pulltruded fiberglass. It could be a good project. Most guys I've spoke with get project boats between free and $1500 depending on the boat and it's condition. A decent trailer is worth almost a grand.

I have gone and looked at this boat. The floor and everything seams solid. The gelcoat is cracking and seams almost gone in places on the topcap. It doesn't look like it can be wet sanded and buffed out . Dash and all the gauges are missing. It is pretty much a bare boat. The trailer is a Stratos trailer it looks in good shape.

I think it would be a fun project. But who am I to say I am just now finishing up my 375v after a year haha

Good luck with what every you do.

Also I own a CNC and a vinyl cutter if you get this boat and need some stuff cut I can get it for you cheap just shoot me a PM if you need anything.

If you've got the time and the price is right, would be a good reno. Price wise, $250 - 750 would be a good range - just dont be too "eager"....If you are handy with the spray gun, you could have a real nice boat......and know it inside out.

The transom and stringers will be fine, (all solid fiberglass). The deciding factor here will be the gel coat. Unless you are savvy with gel coat work or have access to someone who can re-gel at a low cost, I'd walk away (make that run away) from it. To even start looking at a professional re-gel job, figure $8,000.00 or more. In this case since it sounds like the exisintg gel needs to be stripped of, it might appraoch $10,000.00 before it's done.
