    transom question

Anyone ever had the cap off of a 389 javelin or replaced the transom? I am wondering if the transom goes all the way across or if its just as wide as the knee braces. When I got my boat out this year i was doing all the checks and I noticed when I trim in against my transom saver the bottom of the jackplate moves away from the transom about 1/16-1/8 of an inch. I cant get it to flex any at all, just the jackplate moves. I am going to reseal and torque all the mounting bolts and hoping the bolts doesn't sink into the transom when I do it. Has anybody ever had the bolts work loose or is this really bad news?

Hope its your bolts...Cap will come off im sure pretty much like my Stratos did..Screws behind rub rail...Cut where it connects the consoles to the floor and then they might have glassed the transom to the backside of the splashwell

    Re: transom question (JerryT)

I went and checked the bolts this evening, they were barely tight. I tightened them up and they just barely squished the transom at around 70 ft lbs of torque. I can't get it to flex, and everything is solid. Guess I will have to watch it real close. Kinda have a bad feeling about it though. If it has to be done I am going to try and Arjay it instead of pulling the cap. I really like this boat, I saved up cash and paid for it, so I want to keep it.

If it was that loose, you might want to go ahead and remove the motor to give it a good reseal. It'll also give you an opportunity to check the transom core in the motor bolt holes to see if you've really got a prob. Everything I've read around here has suggested around 50 ft-lbs of torque on the motor bolts to the transom. So at 70 ft-lbs, you might expect to see a little compression of the transom.

    Re: transom question (haveme1)

Since I have retightened all 4, I cant get any flex. Me and my father titled the motor up and bounced on it. The front jack came off the ground but we couldn't see any flex. I am going to take the bolts out and reseal them all before the next trip. So for now I think I have dodged disaster. I also drilled into the knee braces and they are dry and not made of wood. It has the klegecell sticker on it so I assume stringers and knee braces are klegecell.

I am fairly sure the transom goes all the across. It has the hump on each side of the motor at the transom, so it would be a pain to get the wood out. Will the arjay self level enough so it would run into the sides behind these humps? I would like to know for if/when the day ever comes that I do have to replace the transom.

Does anyone know if the pourable transom materials will bond to klegecell?

Man, if you did all that and don't have any flex, then you should be good. I'd still pull the motor and do a thorough reseal....cheap insurance.

On the pourable stuff....yes, it will self level just fine....its about the consistency of pancake batter. The problem you would have is getting ALL of the wood out. As for bonding to the kelgecell, I'm thinking it would but to be on the safe side I would just contact Arjay and ask.

    Re: transom question (djarrett)

I saw tyour post on transom. I removed the top cap on a 396xd javelin. I replaced the transom, stringer,s and floor. The transom runs approx. 2inches past each side of the splashwell. Mine was wood and covered in woven cloth and resin. Be careful as the knee braces can get weak from poor sealing from the manufacturer. Also watch the flex on the transom.
