    Rotton Transom need help!!!!

I have a question for you experts out there. I have a 1995 Astro 18b with a Mercury 150 XR6 and just found out about half of the transom is rotton. I read that if the transom is rotton, more than likley the stringers are rotton as well. Is the boat worth restoring???? It needs new carpet, clear coat, transom and maybe stringers. The boat rides great and the motor runs strong! I dont know if I should sell it to someone that wants to restore it, take the motor off and buy another boat without a motor, or try to fix everything myself...?????

Depends, if you are like me & have worked on boats too much, breathed too much fiberglass, resin, gelcoat, itched enough, find a good boat w/o a motor. Or if you want to experience the above, repair it !!. If transom is not too bad, use it !!

Re: Rotton Transom need help!!!! (pappastratos)

Thanks for the advise! I was talking to a few people and they said my transom isn't as bad as I was thinking...He said I should be able to use Seacast and it will be good as new. Have you used this product?

    Thanks for the help!!

Sea Cast is very expensive. I think you can plan on spending $500 to $600 in materials. I've never used it, but it gets good reviews. The process is easier than wood and glass, but to do it correctly, you will probably have to 'pop the cap.' Nida-Bond is another option. It is similar to Sea Cast, but less expensive. If the transom is rotten, that is bad, and must be replaced. And your stringers are probably shot too. Boat resto is not difficult, but it is time consuming and rather expensive.
