Anyone ever replace a transom in aluminum boat?

Looking at an alumacraft with supposedly a bad transom. Has anyone ever replaced a transom in a aluminum boat? How different is it from a bass boat transom replacement? Thanks

I've done it to a couple of jon boats. Usually just involves removing the old plywood and replacing it with new. Haven't worked on any that have a covered back deck so don't know how they are set up.

That's what I would be dealing with. It's an alumacraft trophy 170 to be exact.

I know that it can be done however you need to remove all the foam from the the area that it is being replaced. We have boats all the time that need welding from hitting rocks in the river and learned the hard way melting the foam and burning it. Any good welder should be able to cut and repair the transom.

I replaced the wood on my transom a few months ago on my Lowe boat. I don't know how your boat is set up, but I had to drill out all of the rivets on the back deck and take it off in order to get to all of the bolts that went through the transom. Once I removed the motor I was able to remove the top plate to my transom. I bought a 3/4", 4X8 sheet of marine grade plywood and cut the wood to fit the transom. Once I had the two pieces cut to fit in the transom I glue them together. I used all new stainless steel hardward. It was a job, but it can be done.

I'm working on an 1989 BassTracker Pro 17 that the plywood was rotten. I had completely removed everything from this boat to re-furb it when I found the transom was rotten. All I needed to do then was take a sawzall with an 18tpi blade and carefully cut the top cap off and remove all the bolts and things mounted in the transom in order to remove the transom board out. I plan to use aluminum angle and have a new aluminum skin made for the inside and pour my transom back with Seacast (a fiberglass mixture). They have an adhesive that you brush on the aluminum after properly cleaning it which bonds the Seacast to it making it stronger plus with it being solid fiberglass there will be no more rot.
