how do you tell if your transom is going bad. i have an old boat and was just wondering
The first tell tell sign is a brown soupy liquid that comes out around your drain holes, or jackplate/outboard bolts. You can also pick up the lower end of the motor and lift up and down and see if the transom flexes. Get a flash light and look in the inside of the hull also.

Tilt your motor in the up position apply downward pressure above prop on top of gearcase(careful the blades of prop can be very sharp if you slip).There should not be any movement at the top of transom or at the bottom of motor bracket.Sunken mounting bolts or cracks in splashwell area can be indicaters as well Good Luck!
