    Skeeter Transom Problem

Upon removing a transom eye on a 1990 Skeeter SF175DX I discovered brown muck / water inside of the transom where the bolt was pulling through the transom. I am not sure the total extent of the damage, but the area at least 1' around / below the eyes is wet. I have read about Seafoam for transom repair, but I am not sure of a couple of things:
    1. Would you trust it for use with a 175hp outboard, and 2. Would I be able to access all of the wood in the transom by removing the aluminum cap which the motor mounts to, or would the rear deck cap need to be removed?

I am mechanically inclined but have zero experience with this kind of work; removing the motor and ensuring that a seafoam repair has sufficient strength has me concerned. Sorry for the long post, your comments are appreciated.

    Re: Skeeter Transom Problem (Texasccr)

some people claim its good others have cussed it. for my part i would stick with wood done properly.

there are three way to get the old wood out ; 1 remove the whole upper deck, 2 remove the motor well pan, and cut the outside transom out. i did #2 and would go thru the transom next time.

    Re: Skeeter Transom Problem (skeeter175)

Skeet 175, I feel your pain. Check out my pics in the post at the top of the resto page. I started checking on the bad wood in my transom by cutting the top off of the fiberglass in the area you are talking about.(under the aluminum trim) I was able to reach to the bottom of the transom this way but discovered that the wood was bad too far out the sides to be able to reach through the splashwell cut-out. This is when I new I had to remove the top cap. I had concidered the SeaCast material and consider it worthy if done properly. I did not use it because a sheet of 3/4" marine ply was 75.00 and I figured it would cost 500.00 in Seacast to fill the entire transom. The Seacast must also be covered in glass and resin so no diference in cost there. If you have any questions e-mail me.
