    115 v4 wont idle

Total newbie here, so please be patient.
I was given a 1987(?) Procraft with a Johnson 115 V4 on it. Model #J115TLCNB serial #J569521. Last weekend we took the boat to the lake but the motor would not idle unless it was set to fast idle, the little lever thingy set all the way up.
As soon as I push the fast idle lever down it would stall. Took it back home and checked it again in the driveway, same thing. Any ideas/suggestions will be very welcome. Thank you.

Welcome to the BBC! The proper term for the "lever thingy" is the warm up lever. First time out this year? If so was the fuel system properly winterized? You may have some junk in the carbs. Try removing the drain plugs from the carb bowl and squeeze the primer bulb to flush anything out. Re-install the drain plugs and flush the belly pan with water. Check your throttle and timing linkage for any missing or damaged pieces.

Thank you for such a quick response. Yup it was a first time out, rather dissapointing one, but barring any major parts flying off the motor I think that with the help of this forum I will get thru this. Unfortunately I have no idea as to the winterization. Although I did use fuel stabilizer (in the gas tank only) when we got the boat. And I made sure that there is no water left in lower gear case. I will look at the linkages and carb bowls closely this weekend. How safe is to run the motor on the hose?

Don't exceed 2,500 RPM and you will be fine. Normal idle is around 1,000-1,200 on the muffs with no warm up lever applied.
