225 ETEC overheated. Have a couple of questions.....

Sunday I left the launch, got on pad and made it about an 1/8 mile down the lake and my boat shut down.. No horns, no alarms, nothing.
I turned the key and got the single "clear" beep and restarted my motor. It was idling really rough but had water pressure and again, no alarms going off.
We idled to the bank and figured we would get some fishing in since we were there..
Started the boat a little later and it was the same thing, rough but nothing else. Kicked it up on pad and ran back to the boat ramp.
They checked it today and I had dropped two cylinders.. Apparently the motor got hot..according to the 'puter. 4 horn/light cycles in 5 minutes? BTW, if you run from the dam to dirt at the other end it would take about 4 minutes, it's a real small lake
Not arguing with the tech or the puter but I never saw one warning, much less 4. Boat ran strong, a little sluggish getting on pad, but revved and ran fine once on pad.. (I know I didn't do the motor any good running back to ramp but I was going on the fact that there were no horns going off)
They think that BRP will cover it but I am concerned with the fact that I didn't hear or see anything...
I also thought, maybe incorrectly, that it would have a "limp" mode and wouldn't allow any more damage to the motor. My tech said no.... Snooping on the internet today, I found that they have a SAFE mode...
Kind of confused here. Did I take some things for granted that I should not have or is it possible that there is a glitch somewhere?
    It's an 06.

When was the last time you have been in for service? Has the 300 hour service been performed? Have you been running shallow water? Any MAP updates done? Water pressure? There have been many changes to your motor for the good via bulletins etc. But if you don't bring it in you can't keep it up to date.

What was the water/air temp that day? I had the same thing happen to me with my 2006 225 H.O. while on Guntersville. I had no warning as the engine just shut off. It sounded like it wanted to crank but...

The temp was at 40*-ish and I was on idle pretty much, at a very slow trolling speed. I called my buddy and he suggested priming the fuel hose for possible vapor-lock....

That did the trick; seconds later she fired right up and have had no issues since.

Hope you didn't have two dropped cylinders but rather something as simple as priming your fuel hose.
