Do the casting rods require the first guide or two to be larger like in the spinning rods for best rod performance?

No. I have seen casting rods built with all guides micro and all the same size with no loss in performance. I am building 2 cranking rods right now that are all micro(size 3) all on top.![]()
yeah doesn't matter either way in terms of performance - all micros will work just fine, but if you hold the line with your index finger or plan on doing a spiral wrap, it does help get the line up off the blank a bit. i typically run a double foot 6, single 5, and 3.5s on top or DF 6, single 6 bumper, single 5 and then 3.5s on a spiral.
I use a stripper guide on all of my casting builds and #3 micro's. Thats how I was taught and it works for me. I am still in the learning process though.![]()
