Incomplete pours from jig molds..what am I doing wrong

I have played with these Do It jig molds a few times and just can't get a good pour. I am using a Lee bottom pour pour on highest setting with new lead. I smoked up both molds a bunch, I am placing molds on top of pot as it heats and still no luck. Using the Arky for football head mold I still get the area around the bait keeper coming out incompleye as shown in pictures. Have poured fast and slow as well as anything in between. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

is it possible that you hooks are too cold?

After you pour a few, do they get better?

put your hooks in the mold and preheat them too see if that helps.

Appreciate the suggestions. Been pouring them outside in 100 degree plus heat. Surely the hooks are not too cold but I will heat them up. Also if I have to preheat the mold for every jig I pour its not gonna make sense time wise.

Would oil or some other type of contaminant cause that?

I have been buying my jigheads already poured. Pretty sure I might just continue buying them as truthfully its not that much more expensive than pouring them... ...on a serious note I think the ones I get casted look cleaner and paint better than the ones I pour anyway.

I had the same problem. Make sure that you are holding the mold all the way up against the pot. Do not try to watch the lead pour into mold. By trying to watch the lead pour it will cool and not reach the bottom of the mold.
    Hope this helps

Keep pouring, the hotter the mold gets the better.

I always pre-heat the mold and I use the spray instead of a candle (for release).

I did that prior to any pouring attempt. Still no workey.

Assuming you did use the hook the mold called for, I would say try the above suggested tips, make sure you get the lead hot enough, and definitely flux your lead. Take a bit of beeswax (the size of a pea is recommended but I always use more than that), drop it into the hot lead and back up because it will smoke and then burst into flame. If you are pouring outside, this should pose no trouble, but, if you are pouring inside ventilation is a must!! Stir the fluxed lead and skim the impurities off the top.
I don't believe cold hooks are the issue here with the temps being 100 but load your mold, and set it on top of the melting pot for a few minutes just to see if it helps. There are some molds that just have different 'methods' than others, and you will find that some cavities pour better than others. My pouring techniques vary from mold to mold: some I can hold the mold away from the spout, while others have to be right against the spout. I have one mold that performs real well when I pour from a ladle!! Have fun and most of all be careful!! IM me if there is any other questions you have...be glad to help.

You can also try this. I have the same problems out of some molds but have easily solved it. Once your pot has heated up and is ready to pour, pour several heads through the mold without a hook in the mold. This will fill the cavity with out the impedance of the hook and allow you to heat up your mold from the inside. Once you have done it two or three times, insert hook and start pouring.

spray your molds with this stuff first.. let it dry and enjoy... it will help alot.. kinda the same concept as smoking them with a candle.. but this stuff works alot better..

+1. When i first started this was something i had to discover on my own. Figured out if i ran 10 or so empty pours through the mold, it would stop doing what yours is doing. Nice thing is, you can toss those heads without a hook right back in the pot.

The other thing i was going to suggest was putting the spout on the pot right into the sprue hole on the mold. But someone said that.

When I poured my own jigs I sprayed my molds with Pam cooking spray and also kept my molds on a little BBQ grill. Once I figured that out my pours became alot more consistant. The reason I used the cooking spray is that it took longer to disolve that even any gun oil I used.

I also use the lee bottom pour, I drilled the spout out one size larger, this lets the lead pour a little faster but did the trick for me. And I pour spinnerbaits so I can't put the mold close to the pot.
