    Micro guide spacing (HELP)

I'm building two rods and was thinking i'd like to try using micros. Can someone help me out with spacing. One rod is a 7' fiberglass cranking rod and the other is a 7'6" popping rod. Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Lee

the best way to find guide spacing is to static test it. Without knowing all of the deflection numbers it would be virtually impossible to tell you any kind of spacing. Like I said load it up and move the guides wherever they need to be.

And spiral wrap them. Especially that fiberglas blank, or you'll have line scrub from hell ... or have to use 20 guides.

How do I static test the rod? I'm new to this i've only built a couple rods so far.

Put a load on the rod like you would be catching a fish.

Get your self some rubber tubing (RC fuel line from a hobby store), you can use tape but its a pain. Space the guides out, run some line through them, and load the rod. You want to make sure there is a nice even curve in the blank,no flat spots. If you use the tubing you can easily adjust the guides. Don't worry about the line touching the blank, with micros you will need tons of them to prevent that.

Wow I disagree with that 100%.

Try this for some good info. http://rodbuilding.org/read.ph...85706

i'm kinda in the middle when it comes to a glass rod. Building on top doesn't necessarily require 20 micros for a deep-flexing, slow to moderate blank - its more like 12 if you want to keep the line off the blank. if you don't mind a little scrub, maybe 10 or 11

i just did 2 7'6" glass blanks - 1 on top and 1 bumper spiral, i have 9 guides (including bumper on my spiral and 12 on the conventional. The spiral better reflects where i would place guides for static testing. Building on top, i try to keep the line off the blank as much as possible - hence a few extras.

If it were fast/xfast blank, typically i can use the same number of guides on a spiral as i would a conventional.

"20" was meant to be an exaggeration , not literal.

Still, I'll stick behind my suggestion and just say "No" to line scrub; and "No" to the extra weight of the extra guides and "No" to the extra portions of the blank affected by the extra wraps.

I'm a "less is more kind of guy" and that's exactly why I build my own sticks. Rodbuilder has some good info, but just like here and every other board you have to sift through the opinions and the BS to find out what really works.

That's the beauty of rod building. Build it, fish it, don't like it, change it. Repeat until perfect.

But then again, I'm a fisherman not a professional rod builder.

Thanks again for all of the info. I'm hoping to get started next week sometime. I think I am confident enough with the help i've recieved here. I'll let you all know what I came up with and post pics when I'm done.
