I am an amatuer builder that enjoys building my own rods. No interest in making it a business although it is quite addicting to do. My question is if i build 10-20 rods a year, gifts, donations and to replace my aging rods would it be benefecial to order piece by piece or to just order kits? Any help will be greatly appreciated, Thanks

piece by piece. Shop around for the best prices and sale on guides, blanks etc. It's usually cheapest to get all your blanks at once from 1 supplier due to shipping. Most of the time you can find guides, cork, seats etc at different retailers for better prices and many will only charge you actual shipping costs... Shipping 100 micro guides costs about a 1.25 for reference.
Kits are great to learn with but you'll always be compromising on something - pick exactly what you want for a true custom rod. Most retailers are more than willing to put together all the parts you might need for a build and share their own expertise as to the best setup. Essentially - they will help you put your own kit together.
