I used the static placement system for a long time....now I essentially just wing it. From doing a lot of rods I have a good feel for where they should go. I put them on, then load the rod with line and check the line path. I then move guides to get a path I am happy with...test cast it and then wrap.
Renzetti used to have a graph that worked pretty well.
But what Scott said.
At the end of the day, as long as they are close it'll fish well. But proper guide placement not only improves performance, but also reduces blank failure rate.
