Need help painting jigheads with weedguards

I am pouring sparkie head jigs with weedguards. I have tried pouring them with the weedguards in them and I cannot get powder paint to work without melting the fibers.

I have also tried using the pins while pouring and then glueing the fibers in after painting and the glue will not hold.

What technique do you jighead genius' use to get this job accomplished?

    All help appreciated!

I have used Devcon 2 ton epoxy, to glue in he weedguards. Try to wrap some aluminum foil around the weedguard. Be sure not to twist the foil around it or it will twist the weedguard. I hope this helps.

Now if I could just get the Sparkie jigs to fill out completely I would be in good shape. Ryan

i have always glued in the weed guards after i painted the heads.....jsut got to experiment with the type of glue or epoxy you use....you might try some of the Devcon epoxy.....they have it where its a 30 min set time and a 5 min set time.....the 30 min will work better......get a lot ready and do a bunch at once

I pour with the weed gaurds in. Then dip in paint and clear coat. Most guys loose jigs before they need powdercoat for paint...

I feel your pain. I have tried everything from aluminum foil coating to making copper sleeves that fit over the guard. They all fray or melt. But some of the powder paint I use needs to be heated before and after a dip, then cured.

I say pour with out and when you paint the head put a piece of wire that is the same width as the fiber hole in the hole. Then quickly remove it. Cure your heads and the hole will stay paint free. Then use the Devcon that was mentioned before.

I bought the 1/8" wire at Lowe's for like 3 bucks for a 4 foot section. I then made a bunch of L's about 2 inches long. I put them in the holes before I heat them and after a few uses they need to be scraped with a razor blade.

    Good Luck

I pour with the weedguards in. I just put the loose end up against the melting pot to close up both ends. When I'm ready to paint I use a pc. of copper tubing the same length as my weeduard to protect it. I powder coat mine so I heat up just enough to get a good coating of powder coat to stick to it,may have to just flash it 1 more time with the torch to get a gloss on the jighead.Like Ryan above I use tinfoil to protect my weedguards and like he said don't twist it on or your weedguards will be too.I put my jigheads in a toaster oven and with weedguards set it at 225 degrees.I know that sounds low but I leave mine in 2-3 hrs, the longer the better. All good advice, this is just what works for me.Hope it helps.

Re: Need help painting jigheads with weedguards (Richard F.)

I really appreciate all of the help. I am not sure what I will do. I may dip in liquid paint with the fibers in place, and see how that hold up. I know powdercoat is better, but it may be overkill. Again, I really appreciate the advice, hopefully I can find a system that works for me.
