Hey guys,
I have the small square style marker buoys and it seems that when I throw one out 9 times out of 10 it gets about 10 feet down and then stops because the line gets hung up....What style and brand do others use so I can correct this frustrating issue.

I have both the kind you have and the dumbell looking ones. I like the yellow dumbbell ones the best. I can see them better in all conditions and they seem to deploy a little better, though I don't have much of the problem you describe. I have the supplied line on mine. If you have a different type that may be the problem. Hopefully others may give more input.
Also I put some reflective tape on a couple to use at night, if you night fish.

I make my own out of empty ring free bottles. Just cut the neck down a little on two, stick them together and duck tape them real good, add line and some lead and you have a good one. They work well, I've got 3 or 4 and been using them for a while with no problems. Plus they are black and you dont have to worry about painting them. I started painting mine black so they are not as noticeable, seems like if people see you fishing a marker bouy they end up fishing your spot when you move. I noticed when I started painting them black people didnt seem to notice them.

I believe they are 12oz, to lazy to get up and lookThe necks are a little long so you have to cut them down a bit.
i make my own out of those colored swimming pool 'noodles'...cut a piece about 12 " long or so, tie some heavy nylon cord in the center... ( not rope..about 1/16" diameter) ..measure out the approximate depth you will be frequenting..and attach an 8 oz egg sinker ...the egg sinker wedges in the hole of the noodle for storage....granted it wont stop at the EXACT depth, thats why i carry a few lengths with me...simply prelabel the depth on the noolde with a sharpie...
thats odd that they get hung up....I have some cheap ones from bass pro shops which work fine...they are the rectangular type ones.
I would say maybe try increasing the weight on the ones you have and try again.
I make mine out of 20oz pepsi bottles. 4 oz of weight with 50lb braid. I put on about 60ft of old line. Add a little bit of water so it doesn't drift and spin in the wind. Good to go.

Tide laundry detergent bottles, heavy twine and a piece of lead pipping or a 12oz bank sinker.
Wrap the twine around the bottle and throw it out. It has never tangled and you can make it for almost nothing. I even have one with a piece of cinder block tied to the rope. You can make a bunch of them for 10 bucks. Just pick up some bottles on recycling night or check your local lanudramat for empties
Just remember to rinse them well

Heavier weight is the key. I replaced the decoy strap type anchors on all my buoys with 6 oz cannon ball sinkers with a swivel. The swivel eliminates the line twist you get when rolling them up and with the heavier weight they deploy quicker and stay put even in windy conditions. The line twist seems to contribute to them not unrolling when they're thrown. I use the "H" style buoys FWIW.
