    spro frog hook set

Went out today and used spro frog for the first time. Had two nice fish on and both spit the hook. One fish must have had the frog in its gullet but the hooks did not set. Anyone else have this problem? Do you adjust the hooks? Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Re: spro frog hook set (tuckerabbi)

I've heard of folks bending the hooks up just a little bit so they will hook up better. Also, I've heard of folks changing out the hooks on the spro's.

I've never even had a nibble on a spro so I cant say But I have caught a good amount on a horney toad. I always use 50# braid make sure I feel the fish before I hammer him. Then, I play the fish after he's hooked up. Well, I always kinda ease the fish to the boat anyway, just in case they are not hooked all that well.

    1._ Owner frog hook
2.) add some weight to the back
3.) Bend out the hooks some

The above of couse is if the fish are eating it well, and it sounds like they are.... if they are slapping at the bait change color from light to dark or visa versa.

I've landed 3 on spo frog. I was using Yo-zuri hybrid line. I set the hook 2-3 before landing the fish. I lost a few though. The ones I did land I needed pliers to get the hook out. Hope this helps

You might also consider trying the Spro Jr. My hookups went way up when I switched to this frog. The body is much softer and I haven't noticed any difference in the number of strikes. I also go up one size on the hooks for this frog.

Re: spro frog hook set (RobVT3)

i also do better on the jr. just about the same size hook, smaller body. def. tweak the hook gap open just a bit. i know its hard to do, but my hookset really depends on how she takes it and where im throwing to. if a big fish just slurps it under, i wont hammer it super hard, those hooks are very sharp compared to other frogs. Always throw right back in where you got bit the first time if the fish isnt hooked up more than a sec or two...youd be amazed

I can't bet bite one on that Bully Wa! The Spro and Bobbys' work great but that R2S creation seems to have LMB repellant on it for me.

Re: spro frog hook set (NoCAL)

When i first began using the frogs in the grass I would try and set the hook as soon as I saw the strike....unfortunately lost many fish. I read some articles about giving it a few seconds before setting the hook which was hard at first because it was instinct to try and set the hook. I finally got the patience down and found that I got a really good hook set when the fish was felt at the end of the line. So now I do not set the hook unless the fish on the other end of the line, and it improved hook ups for me. You mentioned your are doing everything right though, so i would definitely check the hooks out on the frog.

Zippers and ridge runner got it figured out - either of their suggestions should help with the issue you are having
