Do you keep a fishing log???

If yes, what information do you record?

I have kept one the last several seasons... but due to a computer crash I lost all that data!! It is the ONE thing I miss most out of everything I had on that computer.

Date, Lake fished, weather, Hot Baits, where (on the lake), results, and for tournies... place and $$ won.

What do you keep track of???

I used to keep a log but somehow got a way from using it. I kept pretty much what you said already, the pay off is if you keep up with it and look back at it down the road, it's amazing some of the details you forget that might help you out at that next tourny there

Re: Do you keep a fishing log??? (Bassbait)

Rick Clunn credits his success in large part by keeping a very very detailed log book. I started this a few years back. I log as much info as I can. Lake (location) date, times fished, water clarity/conditions, water and air temp, barometric pressure, weather pattern and if it changed throughout the day, places on the lake I fished, techniques I used: flipped/pitched, casting, type of cover and structure I fished, number of fish caught, baits and colors used. I also go back to the internet and recall up the weather history for that day (almanac) and print off a copy and attach it to my fishing log and file it.

You will learn to really appreciate your efforts keeping a log if/when you take a trip for a week or weekend somewhere and do well, and want to go back again next year or the year after. It is hard to remember, when you were there (month) and what baits worked for the conditions you were faced with.

Yep, the data I keep is primarly temp, water temp, weather conditions, time of day, and method or baits used. I do not fish a lot of different places so it is a little easier. Most of my bigger bass have been caught between 11:00am and 2:00 pm.

As I get older, I find a short pencil is much better than a long memory.

Yes, at least I try. I use a software and many times find myself looking at a website where I can view archives of fishing reports and troueny results from the past. I like to see Date, water temp, water level, patterns or cover/structure, water clarity and weather. the basics. This at least gives me a place to start.

We ( wife and I) have been doing this for about 15 years, every year I try to do a better job.
It helps if you go to a bunch of lakes or ponds and at diff, times of the year.
By the way we now have 192 bass for 2009 ,up here in the north east?

Re: Do you keep a fishing log??? (red tzx 190)

Added water temp and air temp.

I'm just building an excel file... with an autosum function for the winnings column of course! LOL!!!

And I just bought a second external drive for my computer... this is where I"m going to save all this data this time around. No more computer crashes to take it from me.

External hard drives crash just as easily as internal drives. Ask me how I know...

Yeah, but if I only keep fishing information and pictures on it, it should be fine. I don't plan on leaving it hooked to the system unless I need it. One of the beauties of plug and play.

Re: Do you keep a fishing log??? (waterfoul)

If you have an iPhone there are a few nice free apps that you can use to do this. I have one that stores the picture, weight, and gps location on a map. I like being able to pull the map up and see what areas of the lake I've been catching fish on, something about that visual representation helps me see the patterns that I've been using and find similar areas.

Keep the data on your internal and the removable drives. chances are they wont both die same time. Keep the removable in a different location(i leave one at work)

As for the log, i made a Microsoft InfoPath 2007 template to store this information(excel not even close to what you can do in Infopath) i created drop down boxes for everything i could, you can create tables within the file and also embed photos. Each day is saved as an individual record. Shoot me an email if you want a copy of what i did but, It only works with Office 2007. The features i used will not format properly for 2003.
