    Difference In Types Of Jigs

Never fished much with Jigs. Taking a little road trip where they are popular and sucessful so I got a little box of them with some trailers and all, a kit.

Is there a difference or is it just a marketing thing. There's no description of what is what just a list of types, so I can't really tell which type is which Sizes are different, but not that much.

    Casting Jig 3\8 oz

    Flipping Jig 7\16oz

    Finesse Jig 5\16oz

Re: Difference In Types Of Jigs (Greenhorn)

I like Outkast Pro Staff jigs... but you have to buy a few, buy 3 wts and catch fish...as with any bait, ya ain't gonna stick with it all day w/o a bite. I went thru at least 8 brands...finally I decided to skirt them myself and stick to 1/2 ounce and 3/4 ounce, each in 2 colors (black with blue specks and back with green specks)...
presentation and stealth are also super important in many situations...
most guys go for 1/4 and 1/2 from what I read...
jig loyalty can be as bad as boat loyalty so opinions vary a ton.

Enjoy the journey....locals where you are should dial you in best.

Re: Difference In Types Of Jigs (reelman)

I think some companies call their jigs different things for marketing.

If you will take a look at http://www.dirtyjigstackle, they have the 3 different style jigs you mentioned, plus several others. All of the different styles have pictures and a very good description. I think if you just read through the descriptions, you will get a very good idea of the differences and what you can use each for.

Just FYI, I have been doing really well using the Dirty Jigs casting jig like a shakey head jig. They about rip the rod out of your hand when they hit that thing.

Re: Difference In Types Of Jigs (Greenhorn)

I just started a few weeks ago updating my jig collection. I find the most important thing to look at on a jig is not the name but the head style / shape. For instance, I wouldn't use the same jig to fish around rocks and boulders (my preference is a wide-headed jig that won't get stuck in crevices) as I would to fish grass (either a pointed head jig or a narrow banana style head that would come through weeds easily). Rather than thinking of them as only being used the way they're named, don;t even pay attention to the name but the style / shape of the head.

I make my own jigs and fish 2 different head styles. A basic round head in different sizes based on conditions. and a Football head jig in different sizes. I fish in MO where there is really no grass to speak of in the major lakes. the only other head that I do use is a swim type head in the fall for swimming along dock, but since there is no grass it is more presentation than head style. These do well for me in brush and rock, the major cover fished.

As far as I am concerned there are four types of jigs.

Round/Ball/Finesse head- These are your basic jig with a round head

Pitchin/Cover/Grass/Brush jig- There are as many names for this lure as there is lure companies. These usually have more of a streamlined shape to navigate brush and grass better.

Football jig- These have a footnall shaped head as the name implies. These are used in deeper water over more open cover such as rocks and bottom transition/humps/ditches etc most the time (Not all ).

Swim jig- These usually have some typ of feature that increases the surface area of the jig head helping the stability while swimming such as the BOOYAH version. These jigs can sometimes crossover with the brush jigs. A good example of a pitchin jig that crosses over as a swim jig is the Fitzwater Lures Gorilla Jig. This jig comes through heavy cover very well with a conventional retrieve and swims through cover with ease.

    Hope this helps.
