    braided line popping

I am having a problem with braided line popping when I set the hook when I am flipping. I tried them all, Power pro, stren superbraid, spiderwire, etc. The line seems to break about 3-10 ft from the hook. I am not getting nicks in the line and my rod eyes are fine. What could be the problem?

If you have been using the same section of braid for a while it will get a little brittle from UV exposure...............I recommend pulling about 15-25 feet off the spool & try it. If it's still popping on hookset.......it's time you either get a rod with a little lighter action or lighten up on hookset because braid does not require you to set hook visiously......JMO of coarse.

I have tried stripping back some line. Same problem. I already switched to a light-fast action rod. Same problem. My hooksets might be considered by some as a little "hard", but if I don't set it hard I lose more fish after fighting them for a couple seconds. I talked to some of my friends that have hooksets about as hard as me, and they don't have no problems. This is really a sucky problem, especially on tough tournament days when you struggle to get 5 bites. And when you finally do, the damn 65 lb line breaks!

Man, I've never heard of PowerPro popping like that! You must be one mean motorscooter on the hook set!

What kind of weights are you using? If you are using tungston weights without inserts, this kind of problem can happen. Especially if you peg the weight.

With braid, you will definitely lose more fish with a heavy action rod and a hard hookset. I use a Kistler Graphite Plus Telescopic flipping stick. This has more of a moderate action and would be considered a heavy medium heavy. When you set the hook hard on short line with braid, something is going to give (Either the line, the rod or the fish's mouth). Many fish are lost in the fight because of the large hole torn by a vicious hookset.

Go to a softer rod, don't peg and use a pulling hookset instead of a snap. You should be pleased with the results.

I am using tungston weights, but with inserts. I even checked those with some cotton before I use them use just to be sure. I went to a softer rod for flipping. The action is light-fast. I can't use a heavy action flipping stick because I will break the rod instead, been there done that. But I will try a sweeping hookset, it is just hard to remember to do. Since I was a kid, I have always used mono and had to use a hard hookset.

you may just have to go back to mono like 30# BigGame or bigger

I had that happen to me several weeks ago and was surprised. As another posted here, it may be from too aggressive a hook set. With no stretch it maybe that the line is heating or fraying from friction and degrading at the point where the line makes contact with the guides?

This year is the first time I have fished braided line since I was a kid. I really like the way it casts, the feel you get working the bait, and the lack of stretch.

I am going to go a little easier on the hook set and see how that works.

Re: braided line popping (sooner fish)

Is it breaking at random distances from the bait or at the knot? The ONLY time I've managed to have a "break off" with braid is due to a poor knot. Braid requires a super knot, like a Palomar. I melt the tag end to make a button that makes it impossible for a knot to slip. Test the line. Tie it to the boat trailer, use a permanent marker to mark the line at the knot, then wrap that 65# line around a broom handle, give it a yank. I figure the break will be at your knot.

Don't set the hook so hard. Put some power in it but don't flip the boat. Use more of a pulling action. This has happened to me but my line broke at the knot.

It is not breaking at the knot. I tye a polamar and burn the tag end. It is breaking anywhere from 3-10 ft away from the bait.

That sounds like abrasion over rocks or silted-over wood. You got rocks down there? I'd tie on an 8' fluorocarbon leader using a J knot. It's a little more abrasion resistant than braid and is highly abrasion-resistant line.

Do you have a hook holder on your flippin stik? I have had several customers & fishing buddies with the same problem & it turned out to be their hook was nicking their line while traveling or transporting their rods.. Also other rods too close together on the deck cause the same problem...

That would be about right for his 3-10' length. Hooking bait hooks to rod guides will sure enough rough up a line and ruin guide inserts. I use the metal band from old ballpoint pens taped to the rod as a baitholder. Carolina rigs will fail in that distance range due to the line dragging over stuff. I run the line through my fingers often to check for rough spots and don't hesitate to strip the bad off.

Back off your drag on your hookset, so it slips a little. That's one option if your not fishing heavy cover.

You may not think your nicking the line, when it actually is. I've been fishing braid for quite while. You can cut through a piece of wood with it, and not have any problems. However, if your fishing any kind of rip rap. You would be amazed at how easy it will break across the rocks. Such as river fishing, rocky reservoir's, marina's that are lined with rock, etc... I would suggest using a good fluorocarbon line, or tough mono for those conditions. Leave the braid for the pads, weeds, and wood. It will cut the pads right off, and pull right through the wood without any damage to the line at all.
