    Oil for lower unit

Can I run any gear oil in the lower unit or must it be one that specifies marine use?

I wanted to put synthetic in there, like Mobil 1, I have had good success with it in my TRD differential, and other high performance applications.

Also, why do they always want you to fill it from the bottom, rather then the top? Does it really matter as long as the motor is level, or do I need to let it settle some and recheck?

Run what the oem says, you can get marine synthetic. You have to fill form the bottom because it has to push the air out the top hole, plus you can tell when it is full when the fluid reaches the top hole and runs out a bit. Just fill from the bottom with the pump then when its full plug the top hole then disconnect the pump hose from the bottom hole and plug it quickly. Takes like 2-3 minutes.

I would suggest you run Ultra HPF from BRP, and as posted fill from the bottom to the top, if you don't you will need more than a lube change.

You will trap air in the gearcase filling from the top.... when you start it the air will move to the top and the lube will move down exposing the upper driveshaft bearing to air...It wont last long without lube.

You guys act like I have a dealer around here. I can find Merc stuff everywhere, its the BRP stuff thats tough.

So Mobil 1 synthetic is out huh? I can at least find it, and it has to be better then run of the mill lube, or tech 3.

I would not use it, If you have to use another lube...use the High performance Merc stuff....Its as close as you can get to the Ultra HPF.

Ok I will try the merc stuff, I guess the same goes for the engine tuner/decarb? I have to put that on the agenda too.

Lockjaw, I think the real reason that you "should not" use the automotive type of hypoid lube, is the different anti-foam agents found in both. Since the outboard lower units are not vented as the automotive differential. Foam in a outboard lower unit could possibly blow seals, whereas in the auto world the excess pressure would just vent to the atmosphere.

He could order it from us but it is considered a hazardous material and cost extra to ship it.

When I order Amsoil for my customers it is usually 2 maybe 3 days from order to receipt. Even ran into situation where I order one morning and it arrived next afternoon.
