I have a small club tournament on Philpott at the end of June & need some advice. I've only been on the lake twice.
Thanks in advance.

Hey Todd. I am no expert on Philpott, but have found the goblintown creek area to be very effective, dropshot will work there, as well as texas rigged worm or craws. Carolina rigged stuff will do well also. Deep cranks and slow rolled SB work, and jigs work well on the rocky points. Don't plan on fishing shallow or beating the bank. It just doesn't pay there. I usually fish in 8-20 feet of water, and have wasted days trying to coax fish out of the shallows. I also like to run up the lake/river to the union bridge area, be careful cause it gets narrow up there, but good fishing. Just look at the maps that are available and hit the points. The Smith Mountain Lake map has a fair rendition of Philpott on it.
Personally I have had very little luck on the dam end of the lake, and usually don't even slow down till I have passed Goose Point going north from the dam.
It's a really clear lake, with smallies and LMB, as well as walleye and other not so prevalent fish.
IM me if you have any thing specific you're curious about. I don't check the VA forum often (although I should, it's much more alive than the NC one) and might miss a note here. Thanks to Lea for getting my sorry butt to this forum. Good luck.

End of June could be tough on Philpott. Should be able to find some schooling fish in the Fairystone area (big creek on your left just past Goose point). Carolina rig could be the way to go after that slows down. I would also check the river up past the bridge. You can run a pretty good ways past the bridge in the Smith without much trouble.
Shoot me an IM if you have any questions.
Thanks for the great info.I'm looking forward to getting up there & hopefully catching a smallie.
