People think I'm crazy but I rarely ever use bigger than a 1000 series reel. I use all Shimano spinning reels and it's just what I've become used to. If I use more than about 8lb test I use a baitcaster so I don't see the need for the bigger reels.
While they are definitely not Shimano, I use either 2000 or 2500 size spinning reels.
I use either 2000 or 2500 size spinning reels.

Depends on the use
I use 1000 short pitching
2500 longer presentations
Small as I can get away with for the technique I'm using it for. For all around use and cost I like the Pflueger President 6735X...But we all have our preferences on brand.
Shimano's 2000 or 2500. I have used the 4000 before and it just plain heavy. 1000 is ok when throwing 8lb# or less. 2500 is right there in the middle for all apps including shakey, dropshots, small cranks etc...Good size to go crappie/bream fishing too.
