99 johnson 150 uses a lot of oil

just bought a 99 Larson fish and ski. it has a 99 johnson 150 with carbs. it seems to run fine except it idles a bit rough and uses a LOT of oil. the plugs are coated and the exhaust at idle really stinks "more than any outboard ive owned". it has used over a half a tank of oil in 4 tanks of gas. Help!

You run it wide open and it will use some oil to keep you motor lubed properly.
I'll guess your tank is 25 gallons. 4 tanks + 100 gal. Oil tank is 2.5 gal. You are in the range of normal oil to gas @ 50:1.
You might do you motor some good to give it a Seafoam decarbon treatment.

i added up receipts and it has used between 25 and 28 gallons of gas, don't really trust the gauge. it has used right at half a tank of oil. doing the math the oil consumption is about right if it were a 50 to one at all times. we have used it idling and mostly between 2800 and 3400 rpms pulling kids in a tube and on a board. i haven't been able to run it wide open yet. thanks for the look.

What brand oil do you use? Some oils smell awful out the exhaust. If you pull the kids alot you should get a lower pitch prop for that purpose, its working too hard pulling at that RPM range. My $.02 And I think I would check compresion and head temps.

Normal oil tank is 1.8 gallons the giant economy size is 3+. Yamaha's tank is 2.5 gallons.
