Excellent topwater bite on Choke this morning

Took my neighbor out to 4F this morning. Lots of 13-17" fish on poppers and prop baits beside the grassline. He had never fished those before, and he had a blast, which was my goal this morning - for him to get on them good. Wish we could have kept catching, but after sun came up, we caught very few more.

    All the best,
    Glenn

If you guys get to Choke get there when the gates open, Like Glenn says the topwater bite dies once the sun gets out, but its insane until then! Glenn, I thought you were heading out Saturday.

Nope. Wife put me on lock down Saturday. Sorry! Did you go?
When we got to the park this morning, we had to wait about 10 minutes for the gates to open. We were on the water and at our spot way before the sun came up.

Interesting to note, and I probably should have stopped at the Ranger station to say something, but I let it go - I was the second person through the gate. The first truck/boat went straight to the ramp too, so we were the first people there. There was a car parked on the ramp, blocking two lanes, with two guys fishing the docks. There were also several cars parked in the trailer parking lots up front, blocking the spots up front so that even the early people had to go park further back in the lot. Not a big deal, but that's supposed to be boat trailer parking only, and that car shouldn't have been parked on the ramp like that.

    All the best,
    Glenn

I was out there this weekend and had a saw something that was pretty awsome. One of Chokes finest was in the shallows on the North shore and was purring and arching his back. He was also vibrating his back for the female we could never see. pretty neat see in person. Oh, he was about 13' long.

    Mark,
I saw one a few weeks ago in the same location, doing the same thing, but I didn't see him this weekend. Were you one of the many Skeeter guys I spoke to this weekend over there? I was in a white Triton w/ Black stripes. Merc Opti on the back.

How is the bite after the topwater dies off in the morning? Have you been able to move out on the edges of the grass lines and still catch them on rigs and Crank baits?

Re: Excellent topwater bite on Choke this morning (1BIGBASS)

We were not able to. After the bite turned off, I managed to pick up one more fish on a 4.5" soft swimbait and that was it. I threw a frog on top of the matted grass and into the pockets, swam a soft jerkbait in pockets and edges, poked holes in grass edge pockets with a brush hog, and threw a spinnerbait for a while when the wind picked up on a point... Nothing. It's like they took a nap after the topwater fury wore off.

I didn't try crankbaits though. I've got away from using them and need to get back in the habit. Carolina Rigging... Yawn.... I know I should... but I'd probably fall asleep doing it.

We got off the water at 10am anyway. We might have caught more later, but we had to go pick up some reloading supplies in 3Rivers right afterwards.

    All the best,
    Glenn

Thanks for the info. It was probably to darn hot to say out much later than that anyway, that 100+ heat is brutal. Did you find the reload stuff you neaded? Primers have been hard to come by everywhere around Houston. I am lucky only gun I reload for is my 308 and I have about 2000 primers and plenty of brass, bullets, and powder for now. I cut back on my range trips with the 308 and have been shootign my 17HMR. 17 is still cheap and easy to find.

    Mark,
Thanks. We flipped the wood too - Brush Hogs and BBH's. I also tried Caliham - nothing. Not a tap. A few weeks ago, that is where and how I caught my bigger fish - flippin a BBH to timber in Caliham. I didn't get a tap on Sunday fishing the wood. Did you? (I'm assuming you did.... )

We fished the main lake. That's where we found the most fish. Early in the morning we fished the grass lines with spinnerbaits and tex rigs. Got most of our keepers throwing the BBH.

If you night fish Choke where is a good place to launch? I am assuming that if you launch form one of the state parks and not out by 10:00 your stuck on the lake till they open the gates next morning. Any of you ever night fish it in summer?

I always launch @ South shore. Becasue I like the main lake. They open up by 0600 sometimes a little early if your lucky as they know we wanna get on quick. The bite after the frog bite, for mee turned to a buzzbait bite then I flipped grass a bit but the better fish once the sun came up were crankbaits and T-rigged worms and Flappy Daddy's on wooded points headed towards deep water. then DD22's and hotlips along the deeper breaks. Lots of active fish and a treat even in the heat.
