    cold start problem

I have a 150HP Evinrude model #J150GLSTA that is giving me some a problem when trying to cold start it. What is the correct cold start procedure for this motor? Also, what year is this motor? One dealer tells me its a 2002 and the other says its a 2003? Thanks for any insight??

    Re: cold start problem (serpico)

That is a 2003 carb motor.

Starting procedure: prime fuel bulb until firm, trim engine level, turn key to on, push in on key and hold in while cranking, when engine starts release key, wait one half to one second and depress key for one half second, repeat key depression two more times.

If the engine does not start and run following this procedure something is wrong with the engine.

This is what I have been doing. Does not want to start cold unless I use starting fluid. Any ideas what could be the issue?

Do not use any starting fluid as it will wash the oil out of the cylinders. Have the quick start circuit tested.

List of issues that may cause hard starting on this motor.
    1 Bad Fuel.
    2 Low compression.
    3 Primer not functioning.
    4 Ignition system.
    5 Throttle plates standing open.
    6 Leaking carb bowls.
7 VST leaking air into the fuel.

After reading your post I have some questions...2002 or 2003 Evinrude 150 carburetored motor? I was thinking when the 150 Ficht came out in 1998 that all Evinrude 150s after that were DFI motors not carburetor. I was thinking that after 1998 that if you wanted a carburetor motor you had to buy a Johnson?

It is a Johnson. And Serpico has begun bonding with it.

    Re: cold start problem (ChampioNman)

My fault, its a Johnson motor. I tend to think of Johnson/Evinrude as one in the same.
