    200 venom?

Hey guy's a friend of mine has 200 venom on his rig and the other day he said he was running down the lake and it started to sound loud. He stopped the boat and said he could hear a knocking at idle so he shut it down and trolled in. He asked me to meet him at the ramp the next day to listen to it. When he started it I didnt hear any knocking and it sounded normal took it for a ride and it still sounded normal. Today we happened to both be on the water when he called me to say that it was knocking so I ran to where he was and sure as heck I could hear a low knocking that would increase with rpm. We are going to do a compression test on it first to see the #'s and see if there is a plug problem but I dont hear any skips in the motor it sounds like it is firing on all cylinders. Any ideas on wich way to go would be appreciated. It could be toast for all I know!

Have him check the lower unit fluid too. Look for discoloration or a burnt smell. A model number at least would help us out serial number too.

+1 on the lower unit, after you check the fluid, pull the prop off and look for fishing line. Been there, done that. Same symptoms. You can also disconnect the battery and try moving the flywheel by hand (clockwise) if you can move the flywheel slightly, more than likely it is the LU. (not always)

A friend of mine developed a loud knock in his motor... the bolts on his fly wheel were loose. The motor was around 5-6 years old and had never been worked on before but for some reason the bolts on the flywheel decided to work themselves loose.

I'm going to guess the bolts from the stator came loose and where hitting the flywheel. The Flywheel only has one nut. The Stator has 4 bolts and I think it was 96 or 97 model year there was a service bulletin about changing the bolts out.

I am sure you are correct. I just remember it was loose bolts that caused the flywheel to make a loud noise like the motor was flying apart. He thought it was going to be major problems...a torque wrench and a few minutes fixed his problem.

Plus 2 on the lower. The knocking should get loud and be fast if its a rod, it will be a slower knock with the lower and you won't hear it in neutral.

    Had it happen 3 times.

thanks guys I knew that I would get some good info here. I am going to take a look at it for him tommorow and I will get some more details like the serial # and stuff. I also was thinking about the fly wheel being loose that would be a easy fix.
